When I was asked recently to try out the the Canary All-In-One Home Security device I was intrigued. I don’t generally do reviews of gadgets and gizmos, but I was tempted to try this one for two reasons. One, it looked kinda cool and inconspicuous in design, and two, I could actually recognise that this would be useful in our house in more ways than one.
The Canary is basically a shelf mounted camera that you control from your phone. It’s design means it looks more like a speaker than a camera so there’s no worry that an intruder will simply disable it, which could be a worry with some home cameras. Once you have chosen its position, plugged it in, and downloaded the app, you are ready to go. It really is as simple as that and you can immediately watch what’s happening inside your house anywhere, anytime. It detects motion and sends alerts to your phone when you’re out, on holiday, or even in bed, and you can then decide whether to activate its ear-shattering siren or connect with the local police right from the app. Obviously haven’t tested this last feature, and hopefully never will.
Position is quite important. We’ve chosen to place it facing the living room door as it’s the most high traffic area of the house, but if you really fall in love with it you can have up to four devices which will enable you to swipe from room to room. The HD video camera has a really wide field of view so it will pick up anything in the room and it has impressively good night vision. It stores a timeline on your phone too, so you can scroll through to see what’s been happening. If you feel so inclined you can store video clips and share them #CaughtbyCanary
Which might put some people off. Worry not. If you don’t want your partner to know what you’re up to while he’s at work you can always activate the privacy setting. And by the way, there’s no need to change the settings when you go out as it automatically detects that you have left the house and switches itself to Away Mode.
So, what’s the other way this Canary can improve life chez Dear Designer’s I hear you ask? Well, it might just be what I need to help train my soppy dog to stay home alone. I can’t be the only one with a dog who suffers from separation anxiety? It means I can’t go out. Ever. Unless someone else is home. And I know the answer is to train him by leaving the house for increasing lengths of time, but it would help if I knew how he reacted (and for how long) once I closed the door and walked away. And now I can. We shall see.
