A Loft Style Bathroom and How to Get The Look

Oh, to live in a real loft space. Bare brick walls, exposed pipes, soaring ceilings and impossibly large windows. A girl can dream. And as inspiring as that would seem, such spaces come with their own challenges to overcome. Not everyone can live with homes that have such an obvious industrial past. All of those hard surfaces and industrial features can seem impossible to make homely. Which is why I love this bathroom so much. It has its factory roots on show. Just look at those brick walls and rough-hewn planks. Not to mention that huge downpipe. But it manages to look clean, white and just a little bit feminine too.

Take a Look

The skylight is introducing a lot of light and by painting the walls and ceiling white, and adding white tiles it looks fresh and welcoming. Its industrial past has been respected with metal accessories but luxury has been introduced with fluffy white towels, nickel lights and a elegant touches. The touches of pink are the icing on the cake. A perfect balance.

Refresh Your Home With a Quick Lick of Paint

A quick lick of paint really is the easiest, quickest, and least expensive way to give your home a refresh. It doesn’t have to be a major project (although that can be totally transformative), it can be a small update that makes a difference to a room, a garden or even your home’s curb appeal. You don’t have to have extraordinary DIY skills either. Just make sure you do your preparation, with a light sanding down to give the paint something to adhere to, a primer, and a couple of top coats. Make sure you use the correct paint for the job too. There are so many specialist paints now that will make application easier and increase longevity. In fact if you like the effect of chalk paint, which doesn’t need any preparation and will cover anything, it really couldn’t be easier.

Furniture

Refresh Your Home With a Quick Lick of Paint

Chair in Juniper Green from M&L Paints.

Painting old, tired and out of date furniture couldn’t be more satisfying. By giving it a fresh new colour, you can bring it up to date and create something totally unique. It might be something you have had for years that no longer fits in with your home decor, or something you have picked up second-hand. Either way it’s a much greener way of living and will save you pounds. It’s also a good idea for flat-pack furniture that fits your budget but not your taste. By painting it to fit your scheme, and maybe giving it some new handles, you will have the look you want for less.

Walls

Refresh Your Home With a Quick Lick of Paint

Farrow & Ball, Treron No.292 in Estate Eggshell.

It may be daunting to change the colour of your walls, but it will have the biggest impact on your decorating scheme. Before you take the plunge with a brand new colour, paint up some white card in a minimum of three different shades of your chosen colour to test it out. White card is better than painting directly onto the wall, because you can then move the samples round the room at different times of the day. (It’s also quite hard to paint over different colour samples on the wall and will take more coats.) And just go for it! If you don’t like it, you can always change it.

Front Door

Refresh Your Home With a Quick Lick of Paint

Image and plants from Dobbies

First impressions really do count. Even if you aren’t contemplating selling your home any time soon, wouldn’t you like to make a statement with your front door? It’s the first thing visitors see when they arrive after all. Give the knobs and knockers a polish, and plant up some welcoming pots and it will also make you smile every time you return home.

Garden

Refresh Your Home With a Quick Lick of Paint

Cuprinol Garden Shades, Natural Stone, Barleywood, White Daisy.

Garden furniture always benefits from a quick spruce up to protect it from the elements so why not introduce some colour too? Sheds, greenhouses, and fences can all be painted too for a coordinated look that will draw you outside on even gloomy summer days.

Get Creative

Refresh Your Home With a Quick Lick of Paint

Annie Sloan with Charleston Chalk Paint in Rodmell, Tilton and Firle with Burgundy and Versailles.

So now you’ve flexed your painting skills, why not get creative? Buy some blank canvases and paint up a masterpiece for a fraction of the cost of artwork in the shops. How else will you use up all of those tester pots you’ve been buying? Or if you’re feeling confident you can create a work of art straight onto the wall!

Accessorise

Refresh Your Home With a Quick Lick of Paint

Assorted Painted Pots by Farrow & Ball

Another way to use up tester pots is to paint up jars, pots, bottles and vases to create your own little vignette. Vary the size and shape of the vessels for the best effect and pop in a few seasonal flowers.

Statement Ceiling Lights for All Budgets

I always say that if you are stuck with a central ceiling pendant buy the biggest and most beautiful light fitting you can afford. The chances are (if you’re anything like me) you won’t turn it on very often, so it needs to look good even when unlit. It needs to make a real statement whatever your personal style. So whether it’s bohemian chic, mid-century modern, industrial, traditional or any other style you can think of, there’s bound to be something out there. Look around. Shop around. And to help, I’ve selected some of the biggest and boldest on the market in different price brackets. Now you have no excuse.

My Top 6 Picks from Lifestyle Store Brissi

We’re all guilty of a bit of virtual website shopping on a Sunday afternoon aren’t we? It’s one of life’s guilty pleasures. A cup of tea, a small(ish) bar of chocolate, a scented candle burning, soft music playing, and an iPad. Bliss. This week I landed on Brissi, which if you haven’t already encountered I’d urge you to rectify that right now! Founded in 2001 by Arianna Brissi and Siobhan McKeating, it is one of my favourite stores for exceptionally tasteful homewares with a tad of French flair. They have real stores (5 of them in fact), but why not browse and buy from the comfort of your armchair.

My Top 6 Picks

This post does contain affiliate links. If you decide to buy anything featured you won’t pay any more, but Dear Designer’s will receive a small commission to help keep this blog up and running.

My Top 6 Picks from Lifestyle Store Brissi

The Dahlia Vase in Dusky Pink

It does help that a lot of the fabulous items available are in my favourite colours of black, white, grey and dusky pink. And have you ever seen a prettier vase for showcasing spring blooms? The main feature of the dahlia flower has been created with unique, individual petals and delicately applied on both sides of the vase. Now that’s pretty unusual. And now that I think of it, check out Brissi’s faux flowers which are mighty tempting too.

My Top 6 Picks from Lifestyle Store Brissi

Voyage Cabinet

Now I always think that even if you are buying a piece of furniture for practical reasons, duh like storage, you should make sure it looks good too. Win, win. This travel-inspired rattan cabinet, created in bayur wood and featuring four rattan drawers is a case in point. So much storage, low enough to use the top as a display space and two decorative drawers to boot. Win, win, win.

My Top 6 Picks from Lifestyle Store Brissi

Luna Round Mirror Gold with Shelf

And while we’re on the subject of practical and beautiful this round mirror with an added shelf is just so stylish. I love that there’s a place to put my lipstick (which I’m forever losing btw) or even a pretty bottle of perfume. And I’m thinking this would look lovely in my downstairs loo.

My Top 6 Picks from Lifestyle Store Brissi

Robyn Armchair in Rose Pink Velvet

And this dusky pink armchair would look lovely in the corner of my bedroom. Just the right amount of vintage glamour. I love its gorgeous quilting and unique curved shape. Plus what’s not to love about rose pink velvet upholstery?

My Top 6 Picks from Lifestyle Store Brissi

Voyage Tall Candle Holder and Voyage Low Candle Holder

The candle holders would be pure indulgence. I always love a monochrome tribal style design. The bold print and tones bring the wow factor to your candle display. And from one who loves burning candles, they are a simple way of introducing subtle styling into your home. There’s also a Voyage Vase if you’re interested. Wouldn’t they all look great in my cabinet?

My Top 6 Picks from Lifestyle Store Brissi

Lace Edge Linen Napkins

Last but not least, I have a thing for linen napkins. In fact I have quite a collection, but not so many I can’t have more. These look very French with their lacy edge and might just find their way into my not so virtual shopping basket.

Chic and Affordable Ideas for Small Space Living

This is a project that has recently been completed by Casa 100 Architecture. It’s a tiny apartment that the client wanted to transform into a simple cosy home with light and atmosphere. A tall order. So, to get more natural light into the social area, a second bedroom has been removed by the designers and transformed into a TV room which is now open to the dining room and kitchen. But there are lots of other ideas here for small space living that can be adopted and used. And a few that can even work for rented accommodation without upsetting the landlord.

Chic and Affordable Ideas for Small Space Living

Kitchen

A galley style kitchen is a reality in a lot of small homes. They are especially problematic when they are not wide enough to accommodate regular sized units on either side. This can often result in units on one side facing a blank wall, which wastes a lot of space and storage opportunities. Here the designers have put the appliances in a row on one side and cut down the units and worktop on the other side by half. It still affords a lot of frankly more accessible storage under the worktop, and plenty of preparation space on top.

Chic and Affordable Ideas for Small Space Living

A breakfast bar at one end of the kitchen provides more workable space and a handy place to sit for breakfast, or just to chat to the cook. Every inch of space has been utilized, including the end of the units for books and decorative items.

Chic and Affordable Ideas for Small Space Living

Lighting

Changing the lighting in a space is something that a lot of people shy away from. Even if you just have a single bulb hanging from a central pendant there is still much that can be done with floor and table lamps. Here however, the designers have used metal conduit to place ceiling lights and even wall lights exactly where they are needed. This is so much easier than hacking into the plaster to hide wires and then re-plastering the damage. And so much less expensive. It’s not to everyone’s taste, but its industrial looking aesthetic is modern and actually adds character to this box-like apartment.

Chic and Affordable Ideas for Small Space Living

Storage

There are also some ingenious storage ideas here. Particularly behind the sofa which is often wasted space. Here a shelf provides a place to lean artwork and place personal items, while the side is handy for books. This is a good solution for rented accommodation where nails in the wall could be a problem, and it also means that the display can be changed easily. A sofa bed here would be a good idea for occasional guests too.

Chic and Affordable Ideas for Small Space Living

Cupboards have been kept shallow so as not to take up too much floor space, and shelves have been erected above the cabinets so as not to waste any wall space. They are also on legs which is a good trick to give the illusion of more space.

Chic and Affordable Ideas for Small Space Living

In the bathroom, the mirror doubles as storage and there is a rail for a towel and a shelf under the basin. Both are practical solutions when space is short but neither are too boxy, which would make the room look smaller.

Chic and Affordable Ideas for Small Space Living

Even the metal shelving rack in the dining area is full of books but doesn’t look heavy or cumbersome. It also continues the slightly industrial look of the lighting conduits.

Decoration

A light and airy scheme has been achieved with a mostly white palette but it does not look dull. Most of the furniture is light coloured too which gives the impression of space. The beautiful parquet flooring adds warmth and the patterned tiles in the kitchen, and the rug add pattern. More interest has been added with the many plants, the books and the decorative objects that give a clue to the personality of the owners.

A Botanists Retreat and How to Get The Look

All creative’s know that the little corner we carve out for our workplace should inspire us. It should fill us with joy every time we enter, and bring out the best work we can possibly do. We also know that it’s easier said than done. Especially if that workspace is the corner of the living room, or a tiny spot under the stairs. What we can do is surround our desk or work station with things we love. So if you are inspired by nature, love all things a little bit worn and utilitarian, and find beauty in polished wood, this one’s for you.

Interior Colour Trends – A Touch of Yellow

If you’ve been looking round your grey rooms lately wondering how on earth you can inject a blast of freshness, you can’t go wrong with yellow. And it just so happens to be a trendy colour in fashion this spring too. Just take a look at all the yellow items hanging in the clothes shops and you’ll see what I mean. It teams perfectly with more neutral hues which tone down its vibrancy, and in return, yellow gives an uplifting punch of sunny personality. As with any other accent colour you have to be extra careful with proportions. I urge caution – just a pinch is more than enough.

Take a Look

Interior Colour Trends - A Touch of Yellow

Image shows the French Connection Camden Four-Seater Sofa in steel cotton from DFS.

This contemporary loft-style living room is a perfect example of considered layering. Its surfaces are hard and cold but it has been warmed up with a textured grey sofa, rugs, houseplants, and a judicious touch of yellow. The black metal furniture, black plant pot and dark pouffe anchor everything down, and the addition of a vase of yellow flowers is a nice finishing touch. It’s a relaxing, calm room and the yellow doesn’t dominate.

Interior Colour Trends - A Touch of Yellow

Image shows the Luke Irwin Sari Silk Saffron Rug from (affiliate partner) John Lewis.

This dining room is modern, airy and light-filled. It’s the perfect spot for casual dining or entertaining alike, and the addition of the yellow rug has the effect of bringing the sunshine in. As with the sitting room above the main surfaces of the room are hard and cold, but warmth has been introduced not just by the yellow rug but with the addition of different textures (leather, carved wood, bent wood, baskets and plants) and the gauzy curtains. You’ll note it also has a recurring theme of circular shapes that echo the shape of the dining table.

Interior Colour Trends - A Touch of Yellow

Image shows the Crete: Extending dining table and set of six fabric quilted chairs in mustard from DFS.

Another dining room scheme, but this one uses yellow dining chairs to add a punch of brightness. The quilted velvet upholstery adds warmth, as does the plush rug underfoot. As with the other two examples, everything else has been kept neutral, and the potted plants are a welcome recurring theme.

Now try to imagine these three rooms without the yellow.

The Trend for Dark and Moody Moves into the Garden

As more and more of us are using the garden as an extra living room in our space starved homes, it makes sense that we continue our colour schemes out into the garden too. If we have a preference for mid to dark greys (or even black) inside, continuing this theme into our outside space will create flow and continuity. And it’s bang-on-trend-too.

This post does contain affiliate links. If you decide to buy anything featured you won’t pay any more, but Dear Designer’s will receive a small commission to help keep this blog up and running.

Fences and Walls

The Trend for Dark and Moody Moves into the Garden

Pergola, splashback and worktop in the same rich Old English Green from Cuprinol.

Wooden fences will naturally age to a dark grey if we leave them untreated, but it will take a good few years. And in practical terms if we want them to last a very long time we need to treat them against the weather anyway. One of my pet hates is for those horrible bright orange fences, so why not paint them a much more soothing shade of grey or black instead. It’s much easier on the eye and you will be amazed at how much bright green foliage and colourful flowers will pop against a darker background.

Decking and Patios

The Trend for Dark and Moody Moves into the Garden

Decking painted in Cuprinol Anti-slip Decking Stain.

Similarly why not treat wooden decking to a dark shade of grey too. If you are using composite decking it will coming in grey shades anyway and save you the problem of doing it every year. But either way, when choosing colours consider how they will look together. Much as you would choose things for your interior space. Too much of one colour will look dull and boring, so if your decking is grey, maybe choose a darker shade or even black for your fences.

The Trend for Dark and Moody Moves into the Garden

Seattle Outdoor Rug in Chestnut Brown from Cuckooland.

If you are committed to a dark and moody scheme and your patios are already a colour you cannot or don’t want to change, there are lots of outdoor rugs on the market that will do the job just as well. As in your living room, choose a size that will be big enough for all of your furniture to sit on it. Or at least the front legs in the case of armchairs and lounging furniture. So that it creates a cosy conversation group, just like inside.

Furniture and Accessories

The Trend for Dark and Moody Moves into the Garden

Two-tone panels painted in Cuprinol Ducksback Silver Copse™ and Black.

There is a wide choice of contemporary garden furniture available in black. But if you prefer wood or maybe rattan, black cushions will fit with the dark scheme and bring the whole look together. You can always accessorise with brighter colours on your scatter cushions if you are missing colour and it’s a trick you have used indoors. In fact any colour and any texture will work against a neutral dark background whatever your preferences. Me? I like to keep it industrial looking with aged metals and antique terracotta but the choice is yours.

My DIY Ikea Hack of a Hemnes Cabinet

I’ve been hankering after a tall black cabinet with a white interior for quite some time. Somewhere to display all those little knick-knacks that I’ve collected over the years. Holiday souvenirs, favourite books, family memories, and little personal things that tell the history of my life. It had to be black because well, it’s a colour that goes with my personal style. Black also has more substance and weighty presence in a room I find. And it had to have a white interior so that all of my little treasures stood out in sharp relief. But as with anything else, when you look around for something specific it’s either hard to find or too expensive.

My DIY Ikea Hack of a Hemnes Cabinet

So, not one to give up too easily I decided to create my own bespoke cabinet using a white Ikea Hemnes cabinet and just simply paint the outside black. It does come in black but I figured it would be easier to paint the exterior from white to black than paint the interior from black to white.

My DIY Ikea Hack of a Hemnes Cabinet

If you are going to do this yourself you will need lots of frog tape to ensure sharp lines where inside and out meet. I’d also advise sanding the parts to be painted lightly and using a roller to get an even effect.

My DIY Ikea Hack of a Hemnes Cabinet

The wallpaper came later and used up some leftovers from when we decorated the kitchen. It was okay just black and white but I think the patterned wallpaper takes it to a whole new level. Instead of monochrome and modern it now looks slightly aged and so much more interesting. And my bits and bobs still stand out nicely. You could of course, use a different wallpaper for each shelf making it a lot more boho and eclectic.

My DIY Ikea Hack of a Hemnes Cabinet

Adding the wallpaper has also brought the two rooms together. It’s always nice to have some common thread running through all of the rooms in the house and my thread is fast becoming green and tropical.

Disclaimer: I bought the Ikea Hemnes cabinet over a year ago and it now seems it only comes with a glazed top and panelled doors on the bottom half. Still nice though.

Quick and Easy Ways to Refresh Your Bathroom

Updating the bathroom is one of the most expensive decorating projects you’ll undertake. I’ll even say it costs more than a kitchen renovation, what with plumbing, tiling, new fittings, and labour costs. But what if all you want is a quick bathroom refresh, because you live in rented accommodation or because you just don’t have the budget yet? You might even live in a new house (like me) and it’s just not feasible to rip out those boring builders tiles and start again. Well, it’s easy to bring some colour and personality into the bathroom with just accessories and a little bit of judicious styling. A colourful patterned shower curtain can work like wallpaper for starters, and could be the jumping off point for a scheme you love. Avoid buying matching sets in one place though. It’s better to shop around and create your very own unique look.
