Interior Colour Trends – A Touch of Yellow

If you’ve been looking round your grey rooms lately wondering how on earth you can inject a blast of freshness, you can’t go wrong with yellow. And it just so happens to be a trendy colour in fashion this spring too. Just take a look at all the yellow items hanging in the clothes shops and you’ll see what I mean. It teams perfectly with more neutral hues which tone down its vibrancy, and in return, yellow gives an uplifting punch of sunny personality. As with any other accent colour you have to be extra careful with proportions. I urge caution – just a pinch is more than enough.

Take a Look

This contemporary loft-style living room is a perfect example of considered layering. Its surfaces are hard and cold but it has been warmed up with a textured grey sofa, rugs, houseplants, and a judicious touch of yellow. The black metal furniture, black plant pot and dark pouffe anchor everything down, and the addition of a vase of yellow flowers is a nice finishing touch. It’s a relaxing, calm room and the yellow doesn’t dominate.

This dining room is modern, airy and light-filled. It’s the perfect spot for casual dining or entertaining alike, and the addition of the yellow rug has the effect of bringing the sunshine in. As with the sitting room above the main surfaces of the room are hard and cold, but warmth has been introduced not just by the yellow rug but with the addition of different textures (leather, carved wood, bent wood, baskets and plants) and the gauzy curtains. You’ll note it also has a recurring theme of circular shapes that echo the shape of the dining table.

Another dining room scheme, but this one uses yellow dining chairs to add a punch of brightness. The quilted velvet upholstery adds warmth, as does the plush rug underfoot. As with the other two examples, everything else has been kept neutral, and the potted plants are a welcome recurring theme.

Now try to imagine these three rooms without the yellow.
