Brad Ascalon’s Island Incorporates Seating and Planters into Outdoor Settings

Brad Ascalon’s Island Incorporates Seating and Planters into Outdoor Settings

After being recruited by the Times Square Alliance, industrial designer Brad Ascalon created the Island collection of modular seating and planters for public outdoor spaces. Manufactured by Landscape Forms’ Studio 431, the double-diamond shapes can be arranged into any configuration, from a random layout to acting as a border wall.

The planters come in three heights with the taller ones acting as backrests, while the seats are individual or nested, perfect for linear setups or groupings. Depending on the types of plants, the greenery might hang over the sides making it feel more like a landscaped area as opposed to simply planters.

The various colors help mix things up and lead to playful compositions which are softened by the organic shapes of the plants.

The Island collection was introduced in the middle of Times Square, adding a bit of nature to the surrounding concrete jungle.
