Wallpaper Inspired by Russian Folk Art

I’m often asked how much my travel experiences influence my interior design choices and it’s an interesting question. Travel definitely broadens the mind and makes you receptive to a wide range of historical and cultural differences. It happens without you noticing it initially. And then years later, when you have all but forgotten that trip (apart from the snaps on a memory stick), you see a combination of colours, or a collection of shapes, and you are immediately reminded of how you felt exploring that landscape or that city. And interior design is about capturing the essence of a feeling after all. We want our homes to be practical and comfortable, but most of all we want them to make us feel something.

So when I heard the story of Russian-born Designer Olga Shevchenko, the founder of Olenka Design, I was intrigued. When she first learnt about Russian Crafts heritage at Art School, she didn’t take it too seriously and thought traditional crafts were a thing of the past. And yet, those lessons must have seeped into her psyche.  Years later when trying to enter a career in Interior Design, she ended up working for a global flooring manufacturer as a Surface Pattern Designer, where she learnt to work with pattern repeats and colourways. She learnt about trends and how the industry worked. And all the time she was wondering how none of those beautiful Russian folk patterns had not been applied to homeware products.

So, those all but forgotten lessons developed into a range of wallpaper designs. Each one distinctive and stylish. All of the designs embody that traditional Russian Folk art with a modern British colour palette that works in today’s interiors.

Neva Blue

 Milana Gold is perhaps the most opulent of the wallpaper designs. It was inspired by traditional Russian Khokhloma folk art with its rich history going back to the 17th century. Traditionally it was hand painted, so the original pattern was hand painted by Olga. Neva Blue is wonderfully fresh and uplifting. Milana Hot Pink/Grey takes the nations favourite colour (yes, I’m talking about grey) as a base, and injects it with blooms in vibrant pink. Velina Pink-Peony is one of the newest designs and the most delicate. The intricate floral motif with a soft feminine colour palette creates a calm, dreamy mood in a living space. Although it wasn’t specifically created as a children’s design, it would look beautiful in a little girl’s room.

And when something is designed with love, from the heart, and from deep rooted memories and feelings, the results are all the more stunning.

All of Olenka’s wallpaper is printed in the UK by an established UK wallpaper manufacturer. The wallpaper is suitable for both domestic and commercial use.
