Now that our evenings are darker and Christmas is looming larger, it’s time to up our bar game. After all, staying in, is the new going out. Or so they say. Another saying is, be prepared. So with that in mind let’s designate a corner (or an even larger space if you feel so inclined), to whipping up a cocktail or two when guests arrive.

Be Prepared
The bar trolley has been around for some time now. Some forward-thinking fashionista thought it would be a good idea to re-invent that 1970’s kitsch tradition and it really took off. With a bit more glamour, a bit of an edge, and a lot less tackiness I might add. Or was it a 1920’s fashion that was re-hashed in the 70’s? That’s fashion for you. But it doesn’t have to be a trolley, it can be the top of the sideboard, a shelf, or even a corner of the kitchen worktop. That’s where mine is anyway.
Your guests won’t care. They will be more concerned with how well stocked it is. So keep a few bottles of spirits handy, a good selection of mixers, and plenty of prosecco. Add a bowl of fresh limes, and make sure the freezer is stocked with ice. Beautiful extras are a cocktail shaker, a decanter or two, some mixing tools and some decorative glasses. Drinks always taste nicer in the right glass.

Be Flamboyant
Now is not the time to be restrained. A home bar should be about making a fuss of our guests and ourselves. If it’s an alternative option to going out (because you can’t get a babysitter, you don’t want to rely on taxi’s or the dog won’t let you), you still want to feel as if it’s an occasion. Let’s spoil ourselves. In addition to all of the above, look for some classy accessories (gold insect bottle opener anyone?), a vase of flowers, a neon cocktail sign?
