What do you do when you move into a pretty Victorian terrace house, but the kitchen is stark and clinical and not at all in keeping? There are two options. You can either go down the hyper-modern route in complete contrast to the rest of the house and its period details, or you can install a kitchen that is much more in keeping with the traditional origins of the house. Which is exactly what the owners of this Martin Moore kitchen decided when they moved in. They wanted to reconnect the modern extension with the Victorian origins of the house but still give it a contemporary twist with colours and materials.
The Details
The bespoke cabinetry was designed to be quiet and restrained whilst the bold choice of dark blue on the island, on the wall tiles and on the patterned floor tiles is by contrast very much in-the-now. The marble work surfaces unify the space and are a practical choice for what must be a ‘cooks kitchen’ and the heart of the home. The minimal detailing of the chrome door and drawer handles keep the overall look on the contemporary side of traditional.
The room had some challenges, including different ceiling heights and a structural steel beam. These have been carefully worked into the scheme and now add to the features. The beam has been worked into a desk area and what was originally a problem, now allows the kitchen to flow around the expansive windows, the island and the cooking zone. Anyone using the desk area will be well out of the way of the cook, while still being able to chat and take part in activities.
The large central island is at the heart of the room and the raised legs give it the look of a traditional freestanding piece of furniture. It’s ideally placed for dropping hot pans onto and is no doubt the social hub of this room. Everyone knows that the best parties take place in the kitchen.
