Brussels-based Pierre-Emmanuel Vandeputte is presenting the Isola coffee table during Salone Del Mobile 2018, a piece that references time spent on the island of Isola Comacina. The design wraps black or natural, skintight leather around a powder coated steel frame that results in a taut tabletop.
The long-lasting material tends to be reserved for high-end uses in luxury design but Isola makes an attempt at using it for more humble means, like that of a table. As leather does, the tabletop softens over time as objects are placed on it. When that happens, a handle can be used to tighten it up like it’s brand new.
