House Under Eaves by MRTN Architects

House Under Eaves by MRTN Architects

The recently completed House Under Eaves is a residence by MRTN Architects in Point Wells, New Zealand that’s located in a new neighborhood not far from Auckland. The house was the first built on the flat site and with no neighbors yet, they developed a design that would feel like a retreat away from the street. At first glance, the house looks to be a simple gable style residence with a concrete wall that shields the front door.

The exterior is clad in thick cedar planks, which contrasts with the dark, oversized roof that helps during the heavy rains.

Once inside, you see that the home is actually a split gable with two sections – the front half, which is the garage, entrance, and guest bedrooms, and the rear half, which houses the living areas and the homeowners’ bedroom. The two halves are connected via a glass enclosed hallway at the highest roof point.

A cedar lined wall continues through to the back garden. The wall also separates the kitchen from the dining room and living area.

Sliding glass doors open out to an outdoor sitting room and the garden, giving the living room an outdoor feel.
