10 Beautiful Rooms

Last week the 10 Beautiful Rooms were mostly on the dark side so this week we are going mostly to the light. I honestly can’t decide which I prefer. My house is a mix of both – sometimes in the same room – so I think the only conclusion to be drawn is that The Mad House is one of the other but nothing in the middle.

These rooms are a collection of my favourite things: monochrome, vintage wood, plants, a splash of metallic and some patterned tiles – as long as they are monochrome. In other words my style mantra which is Something old, something new, something black and something gold.

I adore this kitchen below with its soft green tiles and that vintage cabinet to store the glasses and china. Every room looks better with something old in it and I have never seen one that didn’t. It doesn’t have to be actually old but it needs to be a bit rustic or vintage-looking as a foil to all the modernity.

The owners of this Swedish flat were probably cursing at the awkward shaped walls in here but they have managed to dress it up pretty well in the circumstances. The soft grey walls show off the windows and plasterwork perfectly and the raw wood of the table is a great balance to that refined chandelier and parquet floor.

Another raw table here and some old chairs to go with it. Sometimes people worry about having too much wood but if you can contrast light and dark it’s much easier, and less Alpine chalet, than having it all matching.

This all white sitting room appealed to me because with two sons I can never have one so it’s for my fantasy house high in the hills of Italy but overlooking the sea .. still the two extremes. Mind you I love the plants and they are gradually creeping into The Mad House, to the slight irritation of the other Mad House residents who aren’t as keen on all the greenery as me.

This bathroom, styled by Pippa Jameson shows how wonderful a black bath can be. But coupled with the patterned tile floor and simple red flex on the lightbulb it’s a beauty. Note also the rustic wood on the modern black shelves. I beginning to wonder if my bath is paintable. I mean most things are if you prime them right aren’t they?

My bathroom is in the middle of being refurbished after the shower terminally broke and we are thinking of painting it green hence the next two pictures. The one below is from the Campaign for Wool and this room features work by one of my favourite designers Melanie Porter. I’m going to see it this week so keep an eye on my instagram to find out more.

This kitchen below has been painted in Farrow & Ball Studio Green which is currently the hot paint favourite of the four that are on the walls. The shower is being tiled with Carrara marble and I think green and pale grey is a beautiful combination. I will, of course, show you when it’s done.

And finally, well I couldn’t resist just one dark one although this one might be actually more about the flowers than the walls. What do you think?

I hope you have enjoyed this week’s selection of 10 Beautiful Rooms.
