Most people these days aspire to an open-plan living space with kitchen, dining room, and family room opening out on to the garden. It’s the ideal way to live. The family can be together but still have room to spread out doing different things, and the garden just a few steps away, helps to make the most of good weather. And it was also the vision architect Gregory Phillips had for his family home when he purchased a run down Thirties semi eight years ago.
He now has a 10 metre-wide triple sliding door that makes a picture window right across the back of the house, with a kitchen, dining room, breakfast area and sitting room all looking out onto the beautifully designed garden. The extension is so light and airy it’s almost dazzling. Especially with the pure white lacquered Boffi kitchen at the centre of the house. But it is also homely, and filled with art and books.
The garden has seven cube-cut beech trees, a manicured lawn and hedges interspersed with plants. And it looks as good at night as when bathed in sunshine during the day. As Gregory says “If you put in a lot of glass, you’ve got to look out at something good”
“My main thing is making indoor-outdoor spaces, and my passion for gardens has developed. People see things in magazines that they love, but they don’t know how to get them, because there’s just so much choice out there. But I’ve been filtering choices for people for years.”
Gregory Phillips is obviously an unusual architect in his preference for houses rather than big statement buildings.
“I get to be the old fashioned
architect people like to imagine,” he says. “I do all of it, from start to finish. It’s very nice to be the person that says at the end, ‘Here’s your house,’ when you’ve also been the person they came to at the very beginning”.
