Design Milk Travels to… Connecticut

Design Milk Travels to… Connecticut

This week, we retrace the roots of Modernism to the East Coast of the United States. Connecticut, in particular, was the home of a group of five architects otherwise known as “The Harvard Five” who settled in New Canaan in the 1940s. The architects, Landis Gores, John M. Johansen, Marcel Breuer, Philip Johnson and Eliot Noyes are often credited for bringing the advent of Modernism to America. They were all influenced by Walter Gropius, who founded the Bauhaus movement in 1919, and then head of the Architecture program at Harvard University that Marcel Breuer taught at. A mere one to two hour drive away from New York, Connecticut has become known as a retreat from the city with sprawling homes and seaports and the home of Yale University. If it has long been overshadowed by the Big Apple and the close neighbours at the Hudson Valley, we hope this travel guide can show that Connecticut is a design destination in its own right.

WHERE TO VISIT

Philip Johnson’s Glass House. Photo: Michael Biondo.

Perhaps the most famous of Connecticut’s Modernist jewels is Philip Johnson’s Glass House, a transparent, 1,800 sqft glass box that Philip Johnson built in 1949 and lived in in New Canaan, CT. What people are less familiar with is that the Glass House is not a singular building, it’s also part of an entire estate with 8 other buildings.

The “Glass House” refers both the iconic, transparent residence and the other projects on this 49-acre site, such as The Brick House, Da Monster, the Pavilion In The Pond, the Painting Gallery, the Sculpture Gallery, Monument to Lincoln Kirstein, the Ghost House and the Studio. The Glass House is open from May 1 to Nov 30th, and the annual summer party is occurring this year on June 8, 2019, one of the few days where visitors can roam everywhere without a dedicated tour guide and picnic by the pond or on the estate’s grassy patches.

Another architectural marvel is Grace Farms, built by Pritzker-prize winning architect SANAA (the Pritzker is architecture’s highest accolade, equivalent to an Academy Award or a Pulitzer in their respective fields.).

Grace Farms is a modern, serpentine-looking public project that encompasses a dining room; a library with books on justice, the arts, nature and faith; basketball courts; conference rooms; an amphitheater; an art studio and even a movie theatre with free movie screenings.

Yale University’s campus in New Haven is home to the stunning Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript library, with books encased in a central six-story high glass tower. The Yale University Art Gallery, right around the corner from the library, was designed by renowned architect Louis Kahn and is free and open to the public as well. The Yale Center for British Art, and the Ingalls Rink by Eero Saarinen are also just a walk away and worth the visit, so you should plan to spend a few hours on campus grounds.

WHERE TO SHOP

Bulbing 2-D Led Lamps

If you’re making the trip to the Glass House, you should stop by Glass House Design Store on your way out. Located less than 10 minutes drive away from the actual compounds, the design store is cosy outlet with modernist home tools and designer accessories. You can expect to find furniture, lighting and curious everyday objects from glass rulers to Bulbing 2-D LED lamps to Alvar Aalto vases to golden paperweight hands and feet by Carl Aubock.

Terrain is one of Connecticut’s cutest cafes; it is also the specialized home decor and furniture arm of Urban Outfitters, and is the best place to shop for loose furniture or designer knick knacks when your house needs some sprucing. They’ve also got an extensive collection of beautiful plants in their greenhouse-like storefront.

WHERE TO STAY

Camping cottage at Winvian.

The Winvian is a collection of 18 absolutely jaw-dropping luxury cottages in Litchfield Hills, CT that has managed to eke itself a perfect position in the balance of rustic meets modern meets kitschy out of this world.

The residences include a “Camping cottage,” a “Library,” a “Log Cabin,” and even a life-sized “Helicopter”! There’s even a tub in the “Helicopter” lodge for you to lie in, and soak in the views of the helicopter from, well, the grounds of your room instead of up above. Neat, huh?

Prana Residence is an entire house with an indoor pool, a sauna, a hot tub and a solarium spread across 5 acres atop hills in Litchfield County. The actual structure is made up of a timbered geodesic dome covered with foam. A red spiral staircase leads to a tranquil library and a private massage room downstairs. It’s perfect for the whole family, and can fit up to 7 people.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Connecticut is as much as a destination for modernism and architecture lovers as it is a second home to me. My partner lives in Connecticut, and I am in Connecticut for several days out of the month, so I’m a fledgling local. We make it a point to discover new restaurants, museums, galleries and stores on the weekend and I’ve found so many gems along the way.

If you’ve traveled to Connecticut and have any favorite spots or recommendations for first time visitors, let us know below so we can share (and also check it out ourselves the next time we’re up there).

Marrakech Design Collaborates with Charlotte von der Lancken on Two Tile Collections

Marrakech Design Collaborates with Charlotte von der Lancken on Two Tile Collections

Having previously collaborated with Monica Förster Design Studio, Swedish brand Marrakech Design has once again reached out to a Swedish designer to partner on new tile collections. Charlotte von der Lancken came on board and designed two graphic patterns that are inspired by the material’s longevity, as it gets better over time.

Inga-Lill Ovin, owner of Marrakech Design, says:

We wanted to collaborate with Charlotte von der Lancken as she dares to be different and fearless when it comes to design. She has imagination and humour, which you clearly can detect in her design.

FOLD takes inspiration from the infinity symbol as the pattern is a flattened möbius strip that becomes a hexagon-shaped tile. If you’re not familiar, the möbius strip is the mathematical surface that appears to be a one-sided band that joins together and becomes non-orientable. FOLD is available in eight colors.

ETERNAL PATHS takes a looser approach with a curvy line that manages to connect with lines on the next tile to form a never-ending path. Depending on how each tile is turned, a variety of patterns can be formed for different looks. ETERNAL PATHS is also available in eight colors.

Something Underneath by nendo

Something Underneath by nendo

Something Underneath is a minimalist series of objects designed by Tokyo-based studio nendo for Lasvit. The objective was to create a number of forms in crystal glass that would represent monsters that have been shaped by various cultures around the world.

A deep-rooted aspect of Japanese culture is the personification of the intangible and unexplainable. Related to this phenomenon is the idea of “yokai,” which is the notion that all things possess a spirit and a life force. This concept has become an object of entertainment, and includes the creation of Godzilla.

The abstract idea of the unknown, elusive, and invisible define the characteristics of monsters, and nendo wanted to represent that in simple forms. As described by the studio, “This was achieved with a presence that “something” exists, by raising a layer so it resembles a sheet of cloth or paper draped over an unknown “monster”.”

In Odense, a City Known for Fairytales, Hotel Odeon Upholds Danish Design Traditions

In Odense, a City Known for Fairytales, Hotel Odeon Upholds Danish Design Traditions

The city of Odense, Denmark is most well-known for being the home of Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, the man behind The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Pea, The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor’s New Clothes and even the 2013 movie, Frozen. For all lovers of fairytales and literature who are taking a pilgrimage to the hometown of this famous writer, the newly built Hotel Odeon hopes to capture your imagination.

Designed by the Copenhagen-based office Co.Designstudio in collaboration with textile designer Barbara Bendix Becker, Hotel Odeon’s decor has that familiar Scandinavian touch, starting with the central fireplace in the lounge area. “It is a truly Scandinavian tradition to gather around fire. Life and activities have always been turning around the source of heat, and this is what we wanted to bring inside the hotel as well,” says Pernille Arlien-Søborg Henriksen, founder of Co.Designstudio.

Mauve and brown Danish design furniture was supplied by Danish studio Holmris B8 and sets the tone throughout the hotel. The floor is made up of specially treated, white-oiled oak planks, for a subtle cool contrast against the warm hues.

In the conference room, graceful pendants made up of custom folded lamps, by Danish lighting company Le Klint, cut a clean silhouette.

The hotel is currently the largest in Odense with 234 rooms.

What: Hotel Odeon
Where: Odeons Kvarter 11, 5000 Odense, Denmark
How much? Room prices start at USD $101
Highlights: In the heart of Hans Christian Andersen’s neighbourhood, a new Danish Design Hotel keeps up with Nordic tradition
Design draw: Custom contemporary folded lights by Danish light company Le Klint, textiles by Barbara Bendix Becker and loose and fixed furniture produced by Danish studio Holmris B8

Book it: Visit Hotel Odeon

The Napal DAL Sound and Lighting System

The Napal DAL Sound and Lighting System

Sharing a design evocative of one of cinema’s greatest scenes, the DAL’s four spoke, 15.7-inch wide ring proposes more earthly functions within the home – a modern LED chandelier equipped with an integrated wireless speaker intended to “shower” those situated underneath its diameter in both light and sound.

The DAL 2-piece design is an example of an efficient use of space; within its 2.3-inch wide cylindrical column lives a Bluetooth-equipped 10W speaker with its own passive radiator, attached to an anodized aluminum unibody 15.7-inch wide ring equipped with an array of adjustable 15 watt LED lights.

Alongside being dimmable, the temperature of lighting can be customized from a daylight bright 5700K down to a relaxing and warm 2200K. The DAL is also designed to work both as a pendant-chandelier and also in a 72-inch tall floor lamp option, noting the design’s minimalist profile seems most optimal hanging from the ceiling rather than position atop a stand.

The 2-inch driver and 2.5-inch passive radiator isn’t going to fill a room with sound, but the DAL is intentionally designed to operate as an atmospheric speaker system within an intimate perimeter.

Available in both White and Titan Black, the DAL is currently seeking funding for manufacturing, and available for pre-sale over at Kickstarter for $349, with an estimated delivery date of October 2019.

A 3-button Bluetooth equipped remote offers a simplified control, with power, light, and Bluetooth controls available. An additional on/off wall switch is paired with the pendant, while a floor foot switch offers tactile controls for the floor lamp edition.
