10 Beautiful Rooms

Where do you get your interior inspiration from? I always take a good look at restaurant loos as they often have amazing tiles or paint features which you can totally nick for your own home. My own downstairs loo is all black chalkboard paint and silver disco glitter ball – it’s trying to be a bit nightclub but is usually more night dive as it’s full of dodgy graffitti.

The more usual place people go to be inspired is magazines and blogs such as these. But hotels are also a good place and recently I read an article singing the praises of AirBnB as great way to browse other people’s homes for inspiration/ideas to rip off.

Last week someone contacted me to say they had seen a copy of my book in the pictures advertising a holiday cottage on Unique Home Stays. Now even I’m not suggesting you would choose your holiday based on the reading matter in the cottage or hotel but I was thrilled to see it used as a styling prop and went off for a closer look.

Well, I think we can agree there is a wealth of ideas here with the added bonus that if you can even go and stay there if you want a closer look at what they’ve got going on.

This all white sitting room is in a traditional beamed cottage but the decor makes it feel both cosy and modern at the same time – a tricky that few holiday cottages manage to pull off.

This large open plan space above shows you the success of zoning a large space to create separate areas, where as the room below keeps the colour palette monochrome but uses lots of different textures and materials to create interest.

I could definitely be tempted to paint the floorboards dark too after seeing this bathroom. Mind you I’m in the middle of a bathroom refurb and we’ve gone for dark walls instead so I think the boards will be staying light.

Another bathroom shows you that you don’t have to stick with a conventional basin stand. Try mounting a countertop basin on a table or even getting creative with the tiling. We have just bought a length of old laboratory worktop to make a basin stand – you will see it soon but it’s not ready yet….

Finally, this one won’t be for everyone but it might give you food for thought –  a gold brick splashback behind the oven? Why not?

Keep your eyes open – you never know where inspiration might strike next. Where do you look for ideas? My favourite of these is the bathroom right at the top – those dark walls and that huge gold mirror…. mine new bathroom was already looking like this before I found this picture.
