There are lots of reasons for buying British. For many it’s about supporting the economy and British workers. For some it’s more about the lower carbon footprint of goods made in the UK. But I think we’ll all agree that knowing the provenance of the products we buy is becoming increasingly important. We want to support our craftsmen, keep traditional skills alive and know that the finest materials have been used. We want to buy less and buy better.
In the first of a new series on Dear Designer’s, Hattie tells us a bit about her role and her passion for Button & Sprung beds and mattresses.
If you had to describe Button & Sprung in one sentence, what would it be?
Bed buying, made better!

What is your role within the company and how many employees are there altogether?
I work as a marketing executive, taking care of our social media and blog content. I also help with managing the website. The team has grown massively in the last six months – last year there were just five of us, and now we have a team of 10.
How long has the company been going and where are you based?
The company was launched in May 2014. We moved to our lovely new showroom just before Christmas – situated a stones throw from Chelsea Design Harbour in London.
What makes Button & Sprung unique?
We wanted to make the process of buying a bed as simple and enjoyable as possible – customer service therefore is very important to us, we offer 100 nights free returns and a 10 year product guarantee. We also promise to keep our prices as low as possible all year round and never have fake sales or discounts.

Can you describe the design process for new products?
We work very closely with our experienced bed manufacturer to develop any designs that we think would work well with the current interior trends. Comfort plays a huge part in the design process too! The headboard needs to feel comfortable to lean against, whilst looking beautiful.
Are there any new launches or products on the horizon?
We have one new bed design in the pipeline, it has a mid century modern theme – a relatively low headboard with contemporary wings. There’s something comforting about a headboard with wings, it helps you feel secure when you’re snuggled in bed.
How do you source your materials?
For our mattresses we use 100% natural fillings, that are grown on our farm up in Yorkshire. A flock of sheep provide the wool which is crucial for springiness and thermo regulating properties, whilst hemp crops provide a strong and resilient flax filling. Some of our other luxurious fillings such as cashmere, mohair and silk are sourced from specialist suppliers. The factory is only 20 miles from the farm, which means our materials don’t have to travel far and have minimal impact on the environment. Our beds are made using solid beech frames.

Do you offer any services that your competitors don’t offer?
We believe that our range of products is unsurpassed. We have 14 different bed designs, that are available in any size and that can be upholstered in any fabric. This allows customers to create a truly bespoke bed. We also offer free delivery within 65 miles of London, with flexible 2 hour time slots and 2 friendly delivery guys that will assemble your new bed, take away any packaging and even your old mattress for free.
Which product are you most proud of and why?
This is a tough one! We’re proud of the range as a whole, but if I had to choose one, it would be our Willow bed. The headboard is made up of two large pillows, it’s a unique design that looks very contemporary and is also ridiculously comfy!

Iris
What’s your best selling product of all time?
Our classic Camelia bed is definitely one of our bestsellers. It has a tall, plump buttoned headboard with wings and makes a real centrepiece in any bedroom. When it comes to mattresses, our mid-range Drysdale is very popular as you get a lot of springs (3,800 to be exact) and sumptuous fillings for your money. This is very closely followed by our top of the range Teesdale, with 16,800 springs and luxurious layers of silk, wool and cashmere.
What does the future hold for Button & Sprung?
Ultimately, we hope to continue growing the brand and providing more customers with the perfect night’s sleep! Our vision was to focus purely on upholstered beds and pocket sprung mattresses, so we won’t be introducing any other products in to our range except for new bed styles and even comfier mattresses.
What’s the best thing a customer can say about Button & Sprung?
That they are sleeping better than they ever have before, and can’t wait to get in to bed in the evenings! We’ve had plenty of amazing reviews, which can all be read here.
