The InstruMMents 01 Makes Measuring Immeasurably Easier

The InstruMMents 01 Makes Measuring Immeasurably Easier

InstruMMents 01 is a magic wand of inches and millimeters – a clever combination of hardware and software that simplifies the onerous task of measuring distances between points A and B into a playfully effortless rolling motion.

Our first thought upon inspecting the 01 is it shares an uncanny resemblance to the laser pointer we use in our house to amuse/annoy our cats with. And like that same device, this handheld digital measuring tool is outfitted with a red laser at one end, this one engineered to determine the depth of any object rather than to antagonize felines into a frenzy.

Each unit is rated for up to 6 months of battery life, and ships with one replaceable battery included.

Adjacent to the laser element is a rubberized wheel that permits users to roll across any smooth surface – including curvilinear objects – for an accurate distance reading between points. The laser determines depth and shape concurrent to the rolling motion. Compared to the requirements of multiple and imprecise measurements using a ruler or tape measure, the 01 can seem like child’s play.

The InstruMMents PRO app captures key curves measurements of real life objects to download over to CAD software. Available spring 2017.

The other side of the 01 is outfitted with either a pen, pencil, or stylus nub for instances where additional details might require actual jotting down onto paper, phone, or tablet. But for measurements, no paper required. The InstruMMents 01 automatically logs measurements wirelessly and directly to an app (including conversion for scale plan readings).

The InstruMMents 01 is the sort of convenient and utilitarian tool with imaginable applications for both professional and personal projects, especially for designers, modelers, and builders who depend upon accurate measurements. But also for anyone attempting to accurately hang art onto a wall, or attempting to determine the size of a room, or even to keep tabs on a child’s growth spurts with pinpoint accuracy. After using the 01, the traditional fashioned tape measure, with its propensity to move out of place or slide back its length at inopportune moments, seems not only antiquated, but functionally stunted.

Serena: A Leaf-Like Lamp by Patricia Urquiola for FLOS

Serena: A Leaf-Like Lamp by Patricia Urquiola for FLOS

Just in time for Spring, FLOS has introduced a new striking lamp from designer Patricia Urquiola. Serena’s sculptural form gives nod to nature with its leaf-shaped reflector standing at an angle, much like that of a flower’s pistil. The lamp isn’t overly done, instead evoking a more organic and calm feel.

A cylinder base provides the LED light source as well as the place for the dramatic reflector to rest on, which allows for adjustment to direct the reflected light where you want it.

Serena is available in aluminum, black nickel, and copper finishes with a black base.

Reasons to Choose Plantation Shutters for Your Windows

Plantation shutters

It’s three years since I chose the window treatments for my own home from Plantation Shutters, and I can honestly say I’m as happy with my choice now, as I was then. They were the obvious solution for a new build house with smallish symmetrical windows after all. And that has been borne out by the fact that so many of my neighbours have gone down the same route. But there are many reasons why I’d make the same choice all over again, even if I decided to move to a different style of house.

Suitability and Style

As I’ve said, they suited my small windows. When you need to let in as much light as possible you don’t want anything that is going to obstruct it. But also, they suit all types of property from period to modern houses. Edwardian and Victorian facades look stunning with shutters behind casement windows. And modern houses tend to look more Scandinavian in style when white wooden slats are used. They are smarter than blinds, and less fussy than curtains. And as they are made-to-measure even the problem with what to do with a large bay window is easily solved. I’ve chosen white for their classic good looks but you can choose from a selection of materials, and a large range of colours or wood stains.

Practicality

Once plantation shutters are installed, there is absolutely no maintenance required. The also fit inside the window recess, so they are out of the way. And they have no cords which have a bit of a safety issue when small children are around. I just know that mine are going to last for many years to come. Cleaning wise all they need is a quick dust once a week and an occasional wash with warm soapy water. They won’t fade or discolour. And they’ll never need to be taken down and taken to the cleaners.

Light Control

Now this is where shutters really come into their own. As you can have the top and bottom halves working independently you have complete control over how much light and sunlight comes into the room. During summer there is no better way to provide protection against the sun’s glare, keeping out the heat while still letting in light and air. On a personal note my office gets the morning sun and with blinds I’d have to sit in complete darkness in order to see the computer screen. But with shutters I can close just the bit that’s needed, and don’t need to miss out on all those glorious rays.

Privacy

This is another advantage of having shutters. You can close the bottom half for privacy and still let in light from the top. I tend to do this at dusk when you need to light the lamps inside but don’t want prying eyes peering in. Or in the morning when I’m still walking round in my pj’s.

Stunning Looks

There’s no doubt about it, plantation shutters are simply beautiful to look at. Elegant, stylish, simple in design, and the perfect solution wherever you may live.

10 Beautiful Rooms

As some of you may be aware, last week I went to the George Northwood salon for an insanely expensive haircut to get over my raging midlife crisis. Well the haircut was lovely and clearly I am now ruined for anywhere else but, more to the point, what a gorgeous salon. I instagrammed a picture…
