Nifty Wall Storage Ideas for Small Space Living

When I was working out what to do with the guest bedroom and it’s lack of display/storage space, it occurred to me that there must be lots of readers who have the same problems. Modern homes are definitely smaller than they used to be. City living means small cramped spaces and new-build homes particularly, seem to be shrinking. When I was house-hunting a few years ago I was appalled at how small some new homes were. So, the solution in our guest bedroom is going to be a long shelf above the bed. Not so much for storage (you don’t need as much storage in a room that is only used occasionally) but to provide some surface area for displaying pretty things. But why not utilise all of that handy wall space for both? So I went on the hunt for some nifty wall ideas that provide much needed storage but still look aesthetically pleasing.

Chef’s Edition Pegboard, £180, A Little Bit of Almost Everything.

You can never have too much storage in the kitchen. This pegboard has been sized to sit beneath the wall shelves or cupboards, and the worktops. A space that is often unused but oh, so handy for all of those little things you need on a daily basis. It keeps the work surface free of clutter and it you’re creative about it can also look smart and organised.

Steel Wall Shelf, £59, Hurn and Hurn

Above the kitchen table is also a good place to add some shelves. These sturdy industrial style metal shelves are perfect for storing cookery books, herbs and cups and bowls that are used every day. You could even add a jar for everyday cutlery and a stack of napkins exactly where they are needed for laying the table.

Fläpps Kitchen Table, £210, Oostor.

If you don’t even have the space for a kitchen breakfast table how about this fold-down version instead. The two fold-down shelves provide storage and display space but even they can be folded flat when not needed.

Bathroom

Metal Wall Hanging Shelving Unit, £69, Cult Furniture.

So many bathrooms have unused space above the WC and yet its a handy place to store extra toilet rolls, hand towels and toilettries. As with all of these ideas, combine practicality with aesthetics. Add some pretty bottles and a plant or two. Or maybe a sweet smelling candle and some favourite photographs.

House Doctor Black Chic Wall Mirror With Shelf, £159.95, Hurn and Hurn.

Anything that has more than one purpose is ideal for small space living. This mirror is full length so that you can check your outfit as well as your makeup. The small shelf will keep smaller items neat and tidy and even double up as a bedside table if you wish.

Entrance Hall

Penn Wall Shelves and Mirror, £89, Made.

Without adequate storage, the entrance hall is often the first place to get cluttered and untidy.  Wall shelves really do have to do double-duty here. Whatever your style there is probably a shelf that will also provide hooks for coats, bags and keys too. Hang a mirror above it, and you have the perfect place for checking lipstick and hair on the way out the door.

Extending Clothes Dryer, £145, Garden Trading.

Not many of us in the UK have a utility room, but this shelf with pull-out clothes airer could also be used above the bath. It folds away neatly when not in use and will solve the problem of drying clothes nicely.

Workspace

Fläpps Secretary of State, £330, Oostor.

Even if you don’t work from home, you will probably need a place to use the laptop occasionally. Often the kitchen table is being used for other things, so this foldaway shelf is just the ticket. When closed it almost disappears into the wall, and when open it even has handy little pockets for pens and stationery.
