The Loft Kitchen by deVOL

It’s always hard to resist a deVOL kitchen when it’s revealed and this one was no exception.  It’s actually a kitchen display at their Cotes Mill showrooms designed to show customers just how well their Shaker furniture fits in older period properties. As it’s a big dream of mine to one day live in a barn conversion, I’m taking notes on how well the sleek cabinetry works against a backdrop of painted brick walls, original windows, and high beamed ceilings.

Of course, in my dream barn kitchen I want a large island as the centrepiece. And what a lovely idea to have the hob and oven at the heart of the kitchen with plenty of surrounding work space, big drawers to store all the cooking utensils and open shelving at each end to keep all the your pots and pans within easy reach. But I also want a big farmhouse table where the family can sit and chat, eat and work, right in the middle of all the hustle and bustle. Just like this one.

And don’t you think the window seat is a lovely feature? I’ve always yearned for somewhere comfy to sit in the kitchen, but I’m not sure about the current trend to plonk a sofa in there. It just somehow seems wrong. But here the low windows have given the designers the perfect opportunity to fit a cushioned seat linking the sink run to the glazed dresser. An added bonus is the seat lifts to create even more storage. Beauty and function all rolled into one.

Another lovely feature is the high shelves which give cohesion between the two runs and provide another opportunity to showcase vintage pieces, baskets and cookery books.

In fact there is a continental feel to this room, with its high ceilings and the way the light falls makes it feel almost French or Tuscan. The simple cupboards keep all the modern appliances
out of sight and the dark ‘Lead’ paint colour creates a soft and mellow atmosphere. And even though the smooth black granite worktops and chrome catches would be considered quite contemporary, here, mixed with classic vintage pieces they are timeless and just right for the modern rustic look.
