A City-Inspired Rug Collection by Sebastian Herkner for The Rug Company

A City-Inspired Rug Collection by Sebastian Herkner for The Rug Company

Merging grid patterns and layered textures, German designer Sebastian Herkner’s collection of hand-knotted rugs for The Rug Company made their debut at IMM Cologne in January. Comprising two designs – Mainland Dark and Mainland Light – the rugs feature overlapping, four-sided figures that are inspired by city landscapes full of intersections, roads, moving vehicles, and empty spaces.

Both designs are made with a mix of silk and Tibetan wool in four intersecting textures in varying pile heights to give them a three-dimensional feel. Each rug is hand-knotted by skilled craftsmen in Nepal using traditional weaving techniques that machines just can’t reproduce.

From Herkner:

There is a sensitivity and clear identity to my collection. I was inspired by cityscapes and transported characteristics from various contexts to create these dramatic and unique designs.

Mainland Dark and Mainland Light will be available in multiple sizes at The Rug Company’s showrooms and online starting this month.
