I did share the moodboard for this scheme some time ago (here) and finally, I got to take some photographs of the finished room. I can’t tell you how happy I am with how this turned out. I’m quite good at visualising a finished scheme but this room is even better than how I imagined it. I have to give credit to the client though, for the beautiful plants that are flourishing in this bright and sunny space. Don’t I keep banging on about how plants can bring a room to life?
So, going back around two years (listen, you can’t rush perfection) this was an empty space with a yoga mat in the middle of the flagstone floor. And I have to say the most incredible beams! One half of the room had two walls of windows looking out on to the courtyard and the countryside beyond, the other half was windowless with a fireplace. Light and dark. A sunroom and a snug. But they needed to work together as an entertaining space. There is already another main reception room (which I revealed here) so it didn’t need to serve any other purpose than to be a nice place to sit, read, drink cocktails and relax.
There was obviously no scope to use wallpaper or paint colours to bring interest into the room. Why would you want to detract from the original features already there? And the flagstone floor was already a beautiful feature in itself. So the scheme was designed to rely on using an eclectic mix of furnishings and accessories.
And that yoga mat (which belonged to hubby by the way) had already sparked ideas in my head. This was obviously a room that invited quiet introspection too. So I wanted it to be relaxing place whether there was one person or a few. And I also already knew that wifey was a hippy chic at heart who often partied in Ibiza. The scheme designed itself.
The furniture in the sunroom half of the space is what you might expect in a conservatory maybe, but the snug has a huge velvet sofa and is more cosy with richer colours.
The Sunroom
The focal point in this room is the daybed. It’s position was obvious from the start. It’s not only the best wall in the space against which to place furniture, it also has the best view when you’re sitting there. I always try to imagine what it’s like to use a space when working out the position of furniture and I already had a good feeling about using this daybed whether it be day or night. A carved mirror above it carries on the Asian theme and we flanked it with large palms in baskets which are lit with uplighters on the floor. I might try to persuade the client that more cushions would improve this lounging space even more.
Next we added a huge coffee table, two more armchairs, and a few occasional tables for balancing drinks when entertaining. I wasn’t sure my idea of hanging baskets would be taken up, but they look great as a finishing touch. And all of those lush plants look even better than I imagined.
The Snug
In the snug we used stronger colours as it’s quite a dark room. It’s only light is borrowed from the sunroom after all. The sofa is the biggest we could fit in the space and was inspired by one seen at Anthropologie. My client is quite good at commissioning bespoke pieces at good prices, so I’ll give him credit for this one. Again, I think more cushions maybe. The jade coloured side board is also a great piece for adding strong colour and we added lots of lamps to make the room an inviting place to sit at night.
