Moodboard Monday – French Chateau Style in the Bedroom

I pulled this one out of the ‘rejects’ box at the weekend. Although the client didn’t like it, I’m hoping someone out there might. The room was already beautiful. Situated in a converted barn with a beamed ceiling soaring up to the roof apex. My brief was to improve what was already there but to keep to the same style. ‘French Chateau’ was the term the client used.

What I Had to Work With

The layout of the room was already fine. A fat L-shape with the bed in the alcove facing the windows. There were two mirrored wardrobes filling one wall and they were staying. The two windows already had white plantation shutters that suited the windows and the room. The walls were white and would remain so. It would have taken scaffolding anyway to paint the room – so high were the sloping ceilings. The bed, like the wardrobes was staying, and the bedside tables looked perfectly fine and fitted the space.

What Problems Needed to be Solved

The room was huge and barring the wardrobes and the bed, the remaining furniture (two chests of drawers) was too small for the space and rather shabby. There was a large expanse of carpet between the bed and the windows that was crying out for ‘something’. The existing crystal chandelier was also perhaps a bit too small in scale. And the elephant in the room was the large black flatscreen TV between the two windows that had to stay. I also thought that the room was just too ‘white’ and needed some contrast.

The Proposed Solutions

Replace the chest of drawers between the two windows and above which the TV sat with some bespoke cabinets. They would be below the window ledges (so much lower than the existing furniture,with the added advantage that the TV could be lowered) and would span the width of the room. The joiner would be briefed to build them in the same style as the existing wardrobes and bed.
Find a small sofa to sit at the end of the bed. This would a) fill the space better, b) give a new focal point to the room, and c) would be in the perfect position to watch TV.
Find artwork, lamps, cushions, throw etc to compliment a ‘French Chateau’ style bedroom.
