After a brief flirtation with blue as an accent colour in my last post, I thought I’d go the whole hog and explore blue as the main event. Not just any old blue mind you. Navy blue. Which I must admit usually conjours up for me, visions of navy and white stripes, anchor motifs, and bobbing boats. Well no more. In this post we’re not going nautical. We’re going to look closely at the sophisticated side of this grown-up shade.

Darkly Delicious
It’s the colour of midnight. Dark and mysterious, deep and enveloping. Especially when navy blue walls are teamed with a luscious navy sofa. If you go down this route take a hint from DFS and add a few brighter colours into the mix. Like stars in the night sky. This is the Bailey Velvet Maxi Sofa by Sofa Workshop in Royal Blue, £1,529.
Simple Elegance
Navy can be teamed with white without the room looking like a seaside retreat. Here it looks sophisticated and elegant and it’s all down to the furniture and accessories chosen. Upholstered dining chairs instead of wood, an absence of pattern and simple shapes, as well as a contemporary lamp and mirror. Everything here is from the Spring/Summer homewares range at Marks and Spencers.
Raw and Earthy
If you’re more into your taupes and neutrals but still want to try navy blue, just give it a go. Any colours that work in nature will work in the home. Imagine a landscape of sun bleached hills and the colour of the sky just after the sun goes down. Or the golden sand as it meets the sea.
