The Utility Room of My Dreams

Now, I don’t actually have a utility room. It’s something that’s definitely on my wish list for my next dream home, and until then I can but dream. A place to do all of those messy jobs that you don’t actually want in the kitchen. Like feeding the dog, sorting the recycling and even potting up and flower arranging. But even though it’s a utility room it doesn’t mean it can’t be neat, tidy and attractive. In fact, in order to work efficiently it has to be neat and tidy. And attractive? Is that a necessity? That’s not just me because deVOL have already designed my dream utility room and yes, it’s damned attractive.

It helps that this utility room is situated in a lovely old period home with an aged wooden floor and wonky walls. And it helps that it features tongue and groove backboards which are perfectly in keeping. The richness of the ‘Pantry Blue’ paintwork and the skirting gives it a very bespoke feel, even though it’s made completely with standard sized Shaker cupboards.
The design of this space is a little bit different to a kitchen, it’s not just a mini kitchen with the sink under the window, it’s different because it does a different job. People tend to need much less space around their utility sink but want lots of worktop, so the sink is tucked into the corner, which instantly gives a more utilitarian feel, and creates lots of space for folding laundry and washing vases.

The base cabinets are designed to be completely functional, with two pot cupboards and an open cabinet suitable for stacking and storing. Handy for finding things in a hurry. A single glazed
countertop cupboard may not instantly seem right for a utility room, but it’s a beautiful and practical option and an incentive to keep your cupboards well organised. You don’t need to have fancy
stylish things on display, it can be neatly stacked jam jars with nails in, it can be tea towels and linens, it can be plant pots and seed packets and string, whatever it is, if it’s neatly stored it will create an interesting and practical space.

I also love the  hint of warm metal  on the taps and theundermounted copper sink which gives it a real ‘upstairs/downstairs’ feel.

All deVOL cupboards are handmade
in Leicestershire and prices for a Shaker
Utility Room start from £5,000.
