Bay Area-based maker Melanie Abrantes focuses on producing eco-friendly goods that are handcrafted out of materials, like cork and domestic and local hardwoods. Using a lathe, Abrantes turns pieces of wood and cork into into bowls, plates, planters, cups, and stands, each one being unique. The objects are both beautiful and functional with the goal of being used in everyday life.
Abrantes recently wrote a book, Carve, A Simple Guide to Whittling, that teaches you the age-old hobby of whittling wood into simple objects. She even sells sets of tools, which actually include a Band-Aid should you injure yourself.
