Today is day of firsts. It’s my first ever blog-hop. It’s also the first Christmas ever, I’ve had my tree up, and my decorations sorted this early. So let me explain about the blog-hop bit. It’s something that US bloggers have been doing for years but this (as far as I know) is the first UK blog-hop and it has been organised by friend and fellow blogger Kimberly over at Swoonworthy.
All this week over 20 UK bloggers will be sharing their Christmas preparations. There will be home tours, stunningly decorated trees, beautiful table settings, tips for getting a festive look, recipes and more. When Kimberly asked me to take part, I must admit to a small moment of panic. Swoonworthy is rammed full of gorgeous pics of her own home, her own glamorous boho style, and her own stunning photographs. She’s a tough act to follow. But nothing gets the creative juices flowing like a deadline. And a day or two later I was in my local garden centre when I spotted the most amazing collection of faux greenery on display. More fake foliage than you could shake a stick at. And at a very affordable price too. Cogs started to turn. My favourite trend this year (you’ll know this because I’ve banged on about it enough), has been the tropical trend. Green plants, exotic birds, jungle ferns. So why not continue this trend through to the Christmas decorations?
And then as luck would have it, John Lewis contacted me about helping to promote one of their ranges of festive baubles. And they had a range called Shangri-La, which consisted of everything I could ever need to elevate this simple idea, to one that was full of glistening butterflies, iridescent peacocks, glitter dipped feathers and gold tropical leaves. The colours were perfect too. Sapphire blue, deep emerald green, purple and gold. Their own ideas of how to use this theme can be found here.
So armed with flora and fauna, I decorated the hall, festooned the tree, and laid the Christmas table for a practice run. No doubt the foliage will grow and the critters will multiply before too long, and every surface will be covered with trailing ivy, peacock feathers, and flickering candles. I can’t wait. Just hope I’ll be able to put it all away by twelfth night. Well, I might leave a butterfly out. Or two.
The Details for a Tropical Inspired Christmas
Hall Decorations: I used a faux trailing ivy around the mirror in addition to the Moroccan inspired fairy lights that always hang there. I moved the faux cactus here (ousted by the Christmas tree in the living room), and added a faux pineapple crown. I then made little decorations out of faux palm leaves, gold palm leaves and tiny jewel coloured baubles (both of the latter from John Lewis, the ivy and pineapple crown are from Altons).
The Tree: I used an artificial tree from Balsam Hill UK that I’ve had for a couple of years now, and supplemented my own black and gold baubles with new ones from the Shangri-La range at John Lewis (that’s the butterfly clips, peacock clips, gold feathers, gold palm leaves, the green jewel encrusted baubles, and the mini baubles).
The Dinner Table: I started with a plain white cloth, white napkins and black table mats (I can’t actually remember where they are from, sorry). I ran trailing faux ivy down the centre, added in some purple foliage and used another pineapple crown for the centrepiece. I then clipped butterflies and peacocks to the foliage, added gold palm leaves and silver tea light holders and wrapped the cutlery in black ribbon. Suppliers as before.
