Pioneer Carafe and Glass Set by Daniel Schofield Studio

Pioneer Carafe and Glass Set by Daniel Schofield Studio

With silver being used for medical purposes to aid in healing wounds, Daniel Schofield set out to see what other things the material could do. During his research, Schofield learned that silver has been used to both purify and disinfect water, with Egyptians keeping their water in silver containers and early pioneers adding silver coins to their water supplies as a way to keep the water fresher for longer. That’s what led to the handcrafted Pioneer Carafe and Glass Set.

Using borosilicate glass and silver-plated hammered copper, the set was designed to use its silver elements in an economic manner – being the first and last things the water touches. A silver lip acts as the carafe’s spout, while a double silver coin is placed at the bottom referencing the coins the pioneers used to use.

The silver components were hammered as a way to expand the surface area available for the water to come in contact with. While it’s not yet known just how much silver can help with clean drinking water, it could possibly be part of the solution for the global water supply.
