The Stagg EKG and Stagg EKG+ Electric Kettle

The Stagg EKG and Stagg EKG+ Electric Kettle

The Stagg stovetop kettle by Fellow isn’t just one of the most beautiful tools for preparing coffee in our opinion, it’s proven to be one of the most useful and dependable objects in our kitchen that we use in our own kitchen daily. The built-in thermometer, counterweighted handle, and precise goose neck spout helps make consistent pour over preparation dependably simple; aesthetically the austere all-black design makes for a striking, yet pleasing presence upon the stovetop.

Fellow hasn’t been resting on their laurels, expanding upon the appeal of their minimalist pour over kettle design with two new electric kettle editions that fine tunes and simplifies temperature control: the Stagg EKG and Stagg EKG+.

Capsule or pre-ground office drip coffee machines simplify preparation, but subjectively produce an inferior cup of coffee, most pronounced when compared to manual methods like the Aeropress, Chemex, or even French Press. But machines do offer one notable desirable feature: consistent temperature control of heating water. Fellow recognized the coffee aficionado demographic wanted more precise control while heating water, thus their two newest electric kettle designs both incorporate a variable temperature control system to help hit temps between 135°F to 212°F with accuracy.

A circular black LCD screen clearly displays the intended temperature, followed by the “Real Time
Temperature” as the heating progresses. Once the desired temperature is achieved, users can switch the heating element into a “Hold” mode, which keeps the Stagg EKG at set temperature for an additional 30 minutes before automatically turning off. Tea drinkers will also benefit from this level of temperature precisions, recognizing black, white, herbal, and green require different temperatures for releasing optimal flavor.

The more interesting of the two models is the Stagg EKG+, again an electric kettle, but one outfitted with the addition of Bluetooth connectivity and integration with Acaia digital scales and the Baratza Sette 270W grinder for a full digital barista setup. In combination the brewing components in conjunction with a Brewbar Tablet App for the iPad is designed to monitor heat, time, weight, grind, and calculate precise ratios to match intended recipes according to roasts.

For most coffee drinkers, this all may read like overkill, especially if you drink coffee mostly for sugar, cream and caffeine. But for coffee lovers with more discriminating palates (and patience), this type of attention isn’t necessarily unusual or excessive. Fellow has a popular iterative design on their hands for home baristas aspiring for a more dependably delicious cup of coffee with every pour or press.

Both the Stagg EKG and Stagg EKG+ are at the Kickstarter funding stage, each offered at a discount. Considering the proven track record of the original Stagg, unlike other dubious concepts seeking funding, we’re confident both models will see the light of day in the near future, joining their non-electric precursor as a minimalist coffee preparation tool for modernists everywhere.
