The New Tribal Home Collection from Caravane

You must have noticed by now that I’m a big fan of incorporating global influences into interiors. Hello! Did you read my last post? I’ve travelled quite a lot and dotted around my home are reminders of countries I’ve visited. Admittedly small things that I could tuck into a corner of my rucksack. And things that would be able to withstand the journey home without too much trouble. So I’m always interested to see shops and websites where I can buy bigger items that would satisfy my lust for the unusual, the handmade, and the kind of products that are evocative of their country of origin. Even better when it is in a colour palette that would actually work in my own home….

The New Tribal Home Collection from Caravane

This collection is inspired by natural materials and the beauty of traditional tribal craftsmanship using materials found in nature. It pays homage to the craftsmen and pioneers behind these incredible, artisanal techniques. Traditional methods of moulding and printing these materials mean no two pieces are identical, which adds to their unique charm.

The sea rush and cotton Duoba rug (from £395) is inspired by Kuba motifs. While the Mahina cushions (from £75) are reminiscent of  African bogolan mud cloth designs. Each cushion cover offers a charcoal cotton base on which are hand sewn a series of geometric embroidered patterns.  Small ruffled pompoms provide a perfect finishing touch. The mirrors are set within a horn-based framework crafted to create patterns that blend checks and dots.

The Selena family boasts the casual elegance of washed linen for the table in a rich palette of colours. Not unlike the colours of Africa itself. Incidentally, the linen under the plates is neither a tablecloth nor a table runner, but a side-to-side creation that is ideal for a cosy dinner for two. What a good idea? The bowls and dishes are horn that has been heated and then moulded by the skillful hand of a master craftsman. A perfect example of artisanal talent, each item is unique, with subtle differences in its colour and organic contours. All topped off with those beaded napkin rings that remind me of the bangles I have at home.

Don’t you just love these mirrors? Vegetable fibre has been harvested, carefully selected and then knotted by a craftsman, to surround the mirror with a double crown. It evokes the warmth of distant lands: natural but a bit frivolous. I’ll bet you can’t help stroking it with your fingertips.

And finally, the washed linen sheets combined with the patterned Smala pillowcases (from £77) had me at hello. Hypnotic tribal motifs. Each pure cotton pillow case is block printed by hand and is adorned with little knots to provide a sparkling finishing touch.

All available from Caravane.
