There’s nothing quite like a blue and white combination to evoke the feeling of warm summer days. Interestingly I don’t have any blue at all in my own home, let alone blue + white, but I can still sing its praises. For me, it works better when the blue is from the darker end of the spectrum. I’m thinking sapphire blue or darker. And when there’s more white than blue. The total effect is then fresh, clean and totally stunning.

Who Gets it Right?
Marks & Spencer. Admittedly there’s all shades of blue here but the eye is drawn to the darker hues. The textures of the brick wall, the rattan furniture and the abundant plants keep this scheme from looking cold (sometimes a problem with using blue in interiors), and the shots of turquoise provide just the right amount of accent colour.
Sardinia modular furniture range from £149, Lois Coffee Table £99, Jade Reactive Glaze Planter £17.50, Small Apothecary Vase £9.50, Large Solar Lantern £15, Small Solar Lantern £12.50, Stripe Indoor Outdoor Rug from £59.
Monsoon. What better way to use a profusion of blue and white cushions than in a room full of global influences. The black and white rug keeps the scheme grounded and the silver and gold accents add glamour. Once again, the plants keep the overall look warm.
Assorted cushions from £30, Blue Woodcut Quilt, £130, Marble Side Table (nest of two), £120, Sequinned Basket, £28, Large Squares Flatweave Rug, £240.
Sainsbury’s Home. Proving you don’t have to add too much to create an effective scheme. This all-white room and rustic wooden table have been instantly brightened with the addition of patterned cushions and assorted blue and white tableware and glasses.
All from the Shibori range at Sainsbury’s Home.
