Summer dining should be all about simplicity. No one wants to spend hours dressing the table when there are so many better things to be doing. And as the food we eat in summer is usually more informal, so the table decorations should follow suit.
Casual Flower Arrangements
Flowers are always the first choice for decorating the table at any time of the year. But in summer it’s best to keep the arrangements loose and looking as it you haven’t made much effort at all. I love to see simple jam-jars filled with a few flowers cut from the garden. Dot them about the table, and their low height means that you can see the person opposite you too. For a more special occasion, how about filling a terrarium with an assortment of succulents and blooms as Debenhams have done above. It would be lovely for a birthday celebration or even for a wedding.
Edible Table Centres
What could be easier than piling fruit onto a tiered cake stand? As Next Home have done above. And what could be more effective? It’s a trick I’ve used many times, and often add nuts and foliage too to fill in the gaps. If you have more time, you can even frost the fruit with egg white and castor sugar which makes it look even more pretty.
Style Like a Pro
I mentioned in my Summer Style post a few weeks ago that I just use things I have around the house when styling the table outside. The same goes for any time of the year, any occasion, and any location. Scout around for little trinkets that don’t take up much room but that make a big impact. George Home have used a pineapple trinket box for decoration above and added pineapple salt and pepper shakers and a trinket tray to carry on the theme. Gold cutlery carries it on even further.
Foliage and Candles
Kelly Hoppen has created a vaguely nautical scheme above with the use of simple foliage, candles and coral scattered around the table. There’s even a pine cone or two to continue the natural thrown-together look. The pine branches act as a very effective backdrop to the plates of food and will no doubt scent the table too.
Keep it Simple with Mis-Matched Tableware
A table set with mis-matched tableware will always look effortlessly stylish. There’s no need for a tablecloth on the table above from Amara, as the pretty table settings are decoration enough. Keeping to a colour scheme will pull the whole look together, and a simple sprig of flowers will finish it off.
