A Modern Hotel Hides Inside a Former Historic Music Conservatory in Amsterdam

A Modern Hotel Hides Inside a Former Historic Music Conservatory in Amsterdam

You’d never guess from the outside of this immaculate Neo-Gothic facade built by Dutch architect Daniel Knuttel at the end of the 19th century that it houses the Conservatorium Hotel, a modern hotel in Amsterdam that used to be the site of a former music conservatory. Located in the Museum Square district, the building was restored by Italian interior architect and designer Piero Lissoni who gave the hotel a contemporary redesign while still retaining the charm of Amsterdam’s historic past.

Right when you step in, you’ll notice that natural daylight is used as a central design element to highlight the stark contrast between the building’s brick structure and onyx black atrium. The atrium’s steel staircase and multiple catwalks are what I’d imagine a modern-day Hogwarts would look like.

The hotel includes 129 luxurious guest rooms (half of which are essentially duplexes with lofty ceilings, oversized windows, and exposed beams) and is equipped with meeting and event spaces, a 1000 sq. m. Akasha Holistic Wellbeing Center and pool, a selection of restaurants, a bar and lounge.

Lissoni gave the hotel a very Art Nouveau-inspired touch with modern materials, bright accents, clean lines, and custom-made furniture and lighting. Local artists are featured through the hotel’s “Art Months” and “Artist in Residence Suites” programs.

The Conservatorium is part of the new international luxury group The Set Hotels that prides itself on creating grand, modern hotels and experiences in the world’s most vibrant destinations.
