If you have ever dreamt of a rustic mountain chalet where you can snuggle up after a day on the slopes, this is probably the perfect one. A wonderful and evocative combination of warm wood, stone fireplaces, vintage leather and cosy fur. It’s the work of interior designer Marion Lichtig who brings over 30 years of design experience to her client’s projects and mountain homes. She is renowned for working in harmony with the homeowner, and her ethos is simplicity and pared-down symmetry. Lucky homeowners!
Inviting comfort is key, and rooms are often lit by candlelight in direct contrast to the harsh, yet beautiful scenes of mountains, valleys and sky outside.
The blend of soaring wood beams, roaring log fires, voluminous interiors for the gathering of friends and family, squashy sofas scattered with fur throws, are in fact so inviting, I’m not sure I’d ever want to go out. And added to that are a myriad of cosy textures and vintage finds to discover, and touch, and marvel over.
Ideas to Steal
1.A combination of rustic elements (a wooden table, linen napkins, and plain old string) paired with more glamorous elements (silver candlesticks, cut glass, and a vase of roses) will always look elegant. Especially when entertaining.
2. A rack of shelves containing baskets in the entrance hall is practical, as well as excellent for adding rough texture to a decorating scheme. Continue the practical/rustic theme with simple labels for each family member so that they can always find their hats, gloves and scarves.
3. Add extra interest to a room by hanging an antique clock over a mirror.
4. A bunch of twigs picked up on a family walk can make a very effect display in a simple glass vase.
5. Use a decorative mirror in a bathroom to add a romantic air. Source them in antiques shops or even at car boot sales for a totally unique look.
6. Bunk beds make the most of every inch of available space in a holiday home.
7. Use leather gym mats as an alternative to rugs. They are easy to keep clean and will only get better with age.
