To celebrate its 10th anniversary, The National Art Center, Tokyo commissioned Tokyo-based architect Emmanuelle Moureaux, of emmanuelle moureaux architecture + design, for an installation that represents the center’s next 10 years. Forest of Numbers spans a 2000 square meter exhibition space and consists of over 60,000 numbers in 100 colors suspended, almost looking like three-dimensional binary code.
The installation covers the years 2017 through 2026 with the paper numbers ranging from 0 to 9 hung in a grid-like formation. Through the center, a path bisects the installation letting visitors explore the colorful “forest”.
There are 10 layers that reference the 10 years, with each layer focusing on the four digits that make up that year.
