Saint-André Residence is a minimalist house located in Montreal, Canada, designed by Naturehumaine. The project consists of adding a modern extension to the backside of an existing building while retaining the character of the built environment on the street side. The transformation sought to create a bright and open-space single-family dwelling.
The extension created additional space for a larger kitchen on the ground floor to open up to the garden, and cantilevered master bedroom built on the corner of the house on the upper level. According to the architects, this protruding structure creates intimacy in the night spaces as well as a dynamic volume above the yard.
The rear of the home is covered in red brick in order to retain the materiality of the original structure. The cantilevered portion is constructed in black layered fiber cement panels that are cut into diamond shapes, creating a stark contrast between itself and the existing texture. Two skylights were installed in the double-height spaces in order to provide natural light within the center of the home.
