The Infamous Composition Notebook Gets a Redesign

The Infamous Composition Notebook Gets a Redesign

We’re probably all pretty familiar with the classic composition notebooks from years past but they’ve fallen slightly out of favor with more people going digital. Luckily there are still people out there that love paper (me!) and crave a good notebook and one of those people is designer Aron Fay, who designed comp.

Fay went to work at Pentagram five years ago under graphic designer Michael Bierut, who happened to be a lover of composition notebooks, and gave Fay one for sketching. Curiosity led him down a rabbit hole of finding out the origin of composition notebooks and realized just what a storied past they had.

Long ago, paper covered books were wrapped with marbled paper and then beginning in the late 1820s, a new ‘pseudo marbling’ process was developed by Richard J. Wolfe. Thus began the black and white composition notebook we all remember. Over the years, many artists favored them, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Roy Lichtenstein, and Ettore Sottsass Jr. That inspired Fay to create comp, a much higher quality version of the original notebook made from the best materials available.

Using a combination of modern bookbinding techniques, high resolution offset printing, premium materials, and a custom drawn pattern on the covers, comp aims to be the perfect update to that well-loved classic.

Listen: Episode 16 of Clever with Harry Allen

In this episode, product and interior designer Harry Allen shares with Amy and Jaime how his childhood in New Jersey was shaped by frequent field trips to NYC, how he collaborated with chef Daniel Boulud to design his thesis project, and why he decided to cast an actual piglet for his now-famous piggy bank. Also, he’s able to cut a really tight circle on a pair of skates, and we suspect he is a total boss in the rink. Listen:

Along with travel comes luggage, a component just as important as where you’re staying, which is why we’re thrilled to see the latest collection that TUMI just launched. 19 Degree is the brand’s first foray into aluminum luggage aiming to elevate your travels with the ease of a top-quality suitcase. The bag’s bold, architectural design features fluid organic ripples that are imprinted in its aluminum exterior making it the ultimate travel companion.

The ultra durable collection utilizes a reinforced framecase with snap closures (two for carry-on and three for check-in) and die-cast corner caps to reinsure extra protection. On the inside, a lightweight lining featuring an embossed diamond pattern works in conjunction with the exterior design. The suitcases are outfitted with four dual-spinning recessed wheels for easy mobility, a patented X-Brace 45® degree telescoping handle system in aircraft-grade aluminum that reduces weight, and TSA-approved locks for added security.

As with other TUMI collections, the aluminum 19 Degree suitcases will come in a range of carry-on and check-in sizes, and they’re available in Silver and Matte Black.

Candy Brings a Fresh Approach to Seating

Candy Brings a Fresh Approach to Seating

Jaroslav Juřica created a colorful collection that aims to bring a fresh approach to seating. The Candy Collection, for JELÍNEK Collection, is designed around the ergonomics of sitting, featuring curvy, round shapes and solid oak frames to offer a comfortable experience.

Inspired by candies, hence its name, the colorful cushions, meant to brighten your interior and to help create a playful space, are juxtaposed with wooden frames. They worked with the JELÍNEK Collection’s skilled cabinetmakers and upholsterers, along with modern technologies, like CNC machines, to get the finished sofas and armchairs.
