There’s a lot to be said for furniture on wheels. Not least because it can be easily moved when the will takes you. But let’s consider the humble trolley for a moment, because I think this is the most versatile piece of furniture you will ever own. Typically about hip height, with two or more shelves, four wheels, and quite often a handle to wheel it around, it has so many uses. It actually might not be so humble though, because there are some stunningly luxurious trolleys around too. But the principle is quite simple. And then think of all the rooms you can actually put to use this handy piece of furniture, and how invaluble it will be for all sorts of reasons. I’ll tell you now, it is the most versatile piece of furniture, ever.
The Kitchen Trolley

You can keep all your condiments within arms reach with a trolley in the kitchen for instance. Handy in an open-plan space with an extra large island. You know, that kitchen we all dream of with an island hob and bar stools for the guests to have a ringside seat. But even in a modest sized kitchen a trolley could be very useful for storing everyday items and for transporting them to the dining table.
The Bathroom Trolley

Or imagine a trolley in a bathroom. Great for storing towels and toiletries, and also very practical for wheeling up to the side of the bath so that everything is within reach. Like that scented candle you got for Christmas, and a nice glass of perfectly chilled white wine.
The Trolley as a Console Table

Not just for that cheeky afternoon tea, a tea trolley makes a perfect console table in any room. The shelves provide extra storage and a perfect display space. Use the bottom shelf for the less decorative things, like a basket of hats and gloves in the entrance hall, or extra drinking glasses in the dining room. While the top shelf or shelves can be used for a vase of flowers, plants, ornaments and lamps.
The Trolley as a Side Table

A smaller trolley makes a great alternative to a side table. Just enough surface space for a cup of tea, and you can keep your books on the bottom shelf. What’s more you can move it to wherever you choose to sit that night or day.
The Garden Trolley
Garden Kitchen Outdoor Trolley, Chaplins.
Fantastic for barbecues and outdoor entertaining, the trolley can be wheeled to where it’s needed most, or used for serving guests. Bumpy paths and lumpy lawns permitting of course. The top can even be used as an extra work surface too, because let’s face it who has enough prep surfaces when trying to rustle up a banquet in the garden.
The Office Trolley

My trolley at home actually gets the most use in the office. It keeps my desk free of filing trays, books and stationery and can be moved out of the way at the end of the day.
The Bedside Trolley

A trolley is also a great alternative to a bedside table. It has enough space on the top for a lamp, clock and some flowers. While the shelves can be used for reading material, storing the laptop and anything else you might need in the middle of the night. This one was picked up in a junk shop (by my parents, no doubt for pennies) and was given a paint job to spruce it up.
The Drinks Trolley
Bistro Bar Trolley, Atkin and Thyme
But probably the most popular use of a trolley in recent years is as a bar cart. In fact, the bar cart has become the new ‘must have’ for showing off our mixing skills. Not to mention our skills for sourcing glamorous bar accessories and flaunting them. Entertaining at home is no longer a casual affair it seems.
