In response to being asked by a Japanese fashion label to exhibit during Paris Fashion Week, Berlin-based designer Shigeki Yamamoto designed the Play Cupboard built in the same way as the previously designed Play Cabinet 2017. The style is bound to conjure up childhood memories of playing with building toys, like Lincoln Logs and Tinkertoys, especially with the triangular top part that resembles a roof. After sketching and deciding to include the triangular roof, Yamamoto began the building process and worked intuitively until the cupboard was complete. The result had a familiar feeling and it’s because it reminded him of the Japanese temples and shrines he grew up around.
Two front doors rotate up to reveal glass shelves where items can be displayed or semi-hidden depending on if the doors are open or not.
