My Own Ultimate January Survival Guide

While most people are making New Year’s resolutions and tweaking their business plans for the next twelve months, I’m usually wondering how I’m going to get through the next 31 days. January for me is the hardest month of all. The weather is at its worst, the days are still short of light, and there are several months of winter yet to endure. But it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. There are lots of things about January that make it easier, including cosy nights in, comfort food and netflix. But when you’ve had enough of hibernating, you need a plan. I call this my January Survival Guide.

Declutter and Clean

Am I the only one who has a strong urge to clean once the Christmas decorations are put away? And you can’t clean properly while there is lots of clutter everywhere. So the first job of the New Year is to get rid of all the things that are piling up in corners. Old magazines, junk mail, trinkets from the crackers, and anything else that is taking up space on surfaces. After that I usually tackle cupboards and drawers. Getting rid of clothes you no longer need, out of date food and broken things is cathartic. Put the best things on Ebay, or take them to the charity shop and bin the rest. You can’t do it all in a day, so take your time one room at a time and clean as you go along. Trust me you’ll feel energised.

I’m not one for preaching about food and the gym, but trust me you’ll feel better. Stock up on fresh ingredients, try a few new healthy recipes, and get some fresh air into your lungs. That’s enough of that one.

After all that work you’ll need a rest. And that’s exactly what you deserve. Now’s the time to use all of those new bath treats you received at Christmas. Have a long soak and light the new scented candle while you luxuriate in the bubbles. Don’t save them for best. You need them now. And just imagine how climbing into that freshly made bed is going to feel. So have an early night with a good book and revel in the dark nights instead of wishing they were over.

Small Treats Go a Long Way

Money may be tight after the holiday season but a small treat or two will go a long way. A bunch of supermarket flowers is enough for me. Or maybe a new pot plant that I can lovingly kill. A cheery new cushion cover, a few magazines or even a new print to put in an existing frame will make all the difference. Just don’t make the treat more chocolates or a bottle of wine. It has to be something that makes you feel good without making you fat.

This one never fails for me. It doesn’t have to be a big trip. A weekend away with the loved one will break the winter up. Or a bigger trip in a few months time will be something to plan for and look forward to. Whatever works for you and your budget.

Whatever gets you through – Happy New Year to you all.
