I’ve been at it again. Reveling in the Unique Home Stays site for some good old fashioned escapism and fabulous interior design inspiration.
My fantasy of a restorative break away usually involves a secluded location and an out-of-the-ordinary property. It’s all about roaring fires, white washed beams and rough stone walls. Whilst the garden is filled with fluttering butterflies, mature trees, swaying hammocks and stepping stones leading to a wood-fired hot tub. If that’s your idea of the perfect escape too, look no further than Ellesmera Mill. A 400 year old millhouse located near Dartmouth in the sought-after South Hams. While a gentle stroll through the valley leads to the sheltered cove of Blackpool Sands – one of south Devon’s most beautiful beaches.
With four double bedrooms (one also has a single bed) and another single bedroom, it’s actually big enough for the whole family come Christmas. Just another little fantasy of mine, where the entire family decamps to some remote country house for the festive season. I’m imagining mulled wine by the fire while the turkey roasts in the Aga. A huge tree, and enough sofas for everyone to collapse on to watch Home Alone. Then at the end of the long day (and too much wine), everyone has their own luxury bedroom to escape to.
Too early for Christmas talk? Okay, in summer imagine family day trips to Salcombe, Hope Cove and Bantham beach. While between the pretty pastel-hued town Dartmouth and its bohemian sister Totnes, there are a wealth of galleries and independent boutiques for creative types to explore.
Outside the mill, exposed bulb garlands set a romantic ambience in the linhay (not shown, sorry), which offers a private lounging area bedecked with reindeer hides and a roaring woodburner. And a wood-fired hot tub is tucked-away behind the house, offering the perfect place to stargaze by night, or simply absorb the delicious scents of the magical coastal garden.
Inside, the interior is a delicious mix of the old and the not so old. Comfort is key. Squidgy sofas, deep bathtubs, inviting bedrooms and traditional rustic elements.
