Kimura Woodcraft Factory manufactures products out of the wood of rare apple (ringo) trees and hiba cypress trees grown in Aomori, Japan. One of their recent designs, the Ringo Stool, was designed by Takaaki Kamei, who chose to pay homage to his great grandfather and the ladders he used to harvest apples.
Since apple trees are so abundant near the factory and don’t grow tall, it makes sense to create smaller products out of them. For the stool, the seat is made of six, apple-shaped components, made of apple wood, that look as if they’re on display. Each wooden apple is handcrafted by local craftsman who whittle the wood down to a smooth, curvy shape resembling the popular fruit.
