It’s interesting how you get immersed in a concept once you start. I never had a daughter so didn’t get to decorate a room for a little girl. And although I’ve done a few nursery schemes for clients in the past, they were a while ago. But last week, working on a bedroom scheme for four year old Olivia, I just got utterly and totally lost in anything soft, pretty, and yes, you’ve got me, pink.
It’s not Olivia’s main bedroom. This lucky girl is going to have this room for when she stays overnight with her gran. So, consideration didn’t have to be made for too much storage or other boring practical matters. It’s just a room to sleep and play in.
The room isn’t big – about three metres square – with a smallish window in one wall. It also has a low ceiling, so it was always going to be a light scheme. And of course Olivia loves pink. I wanted to give her what she wanted but I didn’t want to do an all-pink room. So the resulting colour scheme is predominately white, with accents of pink, gold and silver. It’s a scheme that will hopefully stand the test of time and will still be relevant – with a few changes of accessories – when she’s a teenager.
The bed is going to be centre stage with a canopy above it. A day-bed was chosen because it will double up as a sofa during the day, and it will be piled high with cushions. The canopy itself may get a few tissue paper pom-poms and fairy lights at the top too. The pretty cotton bedding will be the main block of colour in the room, but pink accessories will be dotted around on the artwork, on the cushions and via a night-light.
The heart wallpaper will be just on the top half of the walls so it won’t dominate, and underneath will be white-painted tongue and groove panels. A soft white rug will go down on the wooden floor. The room already has white plantation shutters and either side will go white-painted peg rails. These will be perfect for occasionally hanging clothes, bags, and jewellery. Baskets have been chosen for extra storage as they are easily moveable and don’t take up too much room.
The one piece of permanent storage is a wide chest of drawers. This will accommodate spare bedding, books, and underwear and will double up as a dressing table when Olivia is a bit bigger.
Now I’m just off to source another pink unicorn.
