And just like that, Autumn seems to have arrived. The nights are definitely drawing in, and the chill over the weekend left us in no doubt that winter is on its way. There may still be a few balmy days ahead, but already thoughts are turning to making the house cosy for the winter months. And suddenly all of those projects that I’ve been putting off because it’s just too nice to be indoors, are starting to come to the forefront of my thoughts. That bedroom redecoration project that has been swirling around in my head, might actually get started. Those car-boot items that I’m going to rescue from the garage and give a black paint job to, that kitchen table that needs sanding, those pictures that need hanging; all of them will now get done.
And if you’re ever in need of inspiration, you don’t have to look further than the high-street for a few pointers.
Create Some Cosy Corners
Small cushion £16.99 Side cabinet £129.99 Dried flower frame £16.99 Tea caddy £6.99 Glass vase £9.99 Velvet armchair £199.99 Large cushion £19.99. All from Homesense.
Autumn always seems to cry out for some colour. It’s those russet leaves outside that inspire us to inject some colour into our interiors too. There’s no need to go for the cliched reds and golds – saturated blues, teals and greens are just as comforting. But once you’ve painted the walls, positioned your favourite chair in front of the window and surrounded yourself with all the things you love, it’s time to put the kettle on. Don’t forget to add your favourite houseplants to this corner of the home. They will appreciate the light the window provides too, and will give your spirits a lift later on in the year.
Make Preparations for Candlelit Suppers
The Harvest Home collection from Sainsbury’s. Prices start at £2.50.
So barbecue season is over, but that doesn’t mean the end of entertaining and candlelit suppers for two. A cheery yellow tablecloth will create its own sunshine and the addition of wood, greenery and natural products will give you that indoor/outdoor feeling all year round. Some flowery cushions and napkins are the finishing touch and come Christmas, simply add some fairy lights and baubles to the branch above the table.
Turn Your Bedroom into a Warm Retreat
Image from Very.
When the days get shorter it’s the perfect excuse to make the bedroom into a warm and welcoming retreat. It’s time to swap the summer whites, for some darker, more romantic bedding, and some fur throws to snuggle under during those early nights or weekend lie-ins. A bedside lamp is an essential item for reading in bed, and don’t forget to add a scented candle for a real treat (just remember to blow it out before going to sleep).
Add Some Welcoming Atmosphere
Metallic swirl glasses from £6 each, Gold lustre stemware £9 each, Ice bucket £35, Black diamanté swirl votive £20, Cocktail shaker £18, Lustre confetti vase £36, Black votive (set of three) £24, Gold flecks bowl £30, Gold deco placemat £12, Wine cooler £25, Gold flecks candle £20. All from Debenhams.
Now’s the time to prepare that bar-cart you’ve been promising to get around to. The silly season will soon be here and staying in is the new going out after all. There’s no need to purchase a special trolley either. I’ve seen some fabulous bar ‘corners’ and bar ‘sideboards’. You just need a few trays to hold glasses, a few drink mats, a cocktail shaker, and your favourite tipple.
Now aren’t you just looking forward to autumn?
