London Fashion Week starts tomorrow and, while here in The Mad House, we eschew such frivolities as we are all about cushions and lights not clothes (well we are about shoes) when this house in London’s Fashion Street came on the market it seemed only right that we go in for a nose about.
The street is actually called Fashion Street, it’s not just a place where the fashionistas live. Actually it’s more where the artists live – Tracey Emin for one. It’s in Spitalfields and this rather splendid house of around 3,000 square foot is on the market for £2,950,000 via The Modern House.
The street was originally named Fossan Street, after two brothers who bought in the area, but it later became known as Fashion. By late Victorian times it was regarded as one of the worst slums in London but all that seems a long way away now. If only one of our great grandparents had bought a house back then and passed it through the generations… that is one of my most common fantasies in every city I visit.
Still, they didn’t so we’ll just have to poke around this one and pretend instead. It was developed by Brinkworth who completely remodelled the interior to maximise the light and create more open plan spaces.
Now there are polished concrete floors, mezzanine levels and double height ceilings as well as a glazed garden room (probably too posh to be called a conservatory) that leads to a pretty garden – a rarity in this part of town. There are two bedrooms above, which look over the garden, while the top floor is a double height master bedroom and en suite and a spiral staircase leading to a mezzanine level.
What do you think? I love the colour scheme and the way the underside of the mezzanine has been painted dark grey. Shall we buy this one or shall we leave our fantasy money in the bank this week?
