Moodboard Monday – The Guest Bedroom Starts to Take Shape

Some of this weekend was spent thinking about the guest bedroom at home. I know, I know, it was a glorious weekend and the footy was on, but I did get to enjoy both also. This is the only room (apart from the bathrooms) that I haven’t tackled yet and I’m now itching to get started. Like every room in the house it has it’s limitations, it has more than one function, and I do have to work with the furniture I have. Over the years it’s become the room that redundant furniture goes to to retire. Not that I don’t still love that furniture. It’s just that my tastes and style have moved on a tad. So what I have is a large, quite ornate wardrobe that takes up one whole wall, an iron bedstead, a wood and rattan bedside table, and a piano. Oh, and a spare rattan chair that matches my dining chairs. There’s no room for anything else, so that’s it.

On top of all of this the room is quite small and has absolutely no features at all. And I mean none. The smallish window is centred on one wall and has white plantation shutters, the carpet is beige, and the walls are magnolia. Is it any wonder that I close the door every time I walk past? I owe my guests an apology.

Scheme One

Currently my favourite scheme. I never thought I’d be adding curtains in this house, but the window and surrounding wall needs them. Alternatively, I could have added pattern and colour with wallpaper, but the room is so small and kinda so crammed with furniture that I feel bold wallpaper will be overwhelming. I’m feeling the grey striped wallpaper (and it’s from B&Q so my purse will love it) and the green curtains will add some personality. The rug I already have. The star shaped pendant I already have. and I’ve ordered the brass table lamp. Emerald green and blue accessories will complete the look.

Scheme Two

Working with the same basics I’ve added a more traditional floral curtain treatment but brought it up to date with boho accessories in shades of grey, black, cream and ochre. It has more texture going on, but runs the risk of looking too traditional and maybe a bit bland. The jury is out on this one.

Possible Accessories

Because there is very little opportunity to add accessories in the room (no surface space) except on the walls, I’m thinking of adding a shelf above the bed. One that is chunky and has iron brackets to echo the iron bedstead. I could hang a pendant lamp from it, as I only have one bedside table, and use it for plants, books and accessories. On the one remaining wall I quite like the idea of a group of mirrors.
