I don’t often get to do final reveals here, unless it’s for my own home. Most of my clients just want ideas, moodboards and shopping lists, and they get on with it themselves. Which is nice, but it means that I don’t always get to see the final room, or if I do it’s quite a time later and the scheme has morphed into something else entirely. So I’m really pleased that in the case of this neutral and warm living room I was able to photograph the end result, and that it is very close to the moodboard I created just under a year ago.
To recap, the room was just as the builders had left it with magnolia walls and beige carpet. My lovely clients (who are also busy in the blogging world) wanted a neutral scheme and had already fallen in love with the wallpaper that is now on one of the walls. But before all of this could be put in place the bones of the room were improved. The fitted carpet was replaced with engineered hardwood, which is beautiful and has completely changed the room. Then the two doors – one from the hall and one into the kitchen – were replaced with half-glazed versions in the same style. This was really to improve light-flow into the windowless hall but they have also improved the living room too. You can now see out into the hall and the two spaces are better visually connected.
As already mentioned, one wall was covered in mirrored wallpaper and the other three were painted in a mid to darkish brown. I have to give a big shout out to the BF here as he is the one who expertly papered and painted the room. We make an excellent team! Finally the silk for the curtains was chosen in a colour that would blend in with the walls. In fact the vertical blinds at the french windows and the central light fitting were the only two things that remained of the original room.
It’s a space that’s mainly used for watching TV and relaxing in the evenings so comfort was key, and as neutral schemes can sometimes be quite bland I included lots of texture for added interest. The furniture was also chosen with ‘added interest’ in mind. The sofas are plump but elegant in style, as befits something that is going with that luxurious wallpaper. The coffee table has a marble top and curvaceous details on the base, and the TV unit and side tables have Moroccan inspired carvings with mirrors behind. With no pattern appearing anywhere in the room, it was necessary to chose decorative finishes where we could.
To accessorise, silver accents were chosen. Mainly because the wallpaper is silver foiled but also because silver has the effect of lifting the scheme and bouncing light around the room. Even some of the cushions have a silver metallic pattern. The artwork over one of the sofas was chosen in shades to complement the room and a huge rusted metal clock adorns the wall above the other sofa.
Of course, one or two things changed along the way, but it’s pretty much how I saw it in my mind. And I have to say I’m pretty pleased with it. And so are the clients. They say that it now feels more like home and that they use it much more. I can’t ask more than that.
