Making the Country Cottage Cosy for Winter Guests

Last week we managed to grab a couple of days at the country cottage between guests. We’ve been so busy this year with bookings that it’s been months since our last visit and we were eager to check things out for our own peace of mind. I’m not sure why we were so worried because the place was spotless. We’ve struck gold with our cleaner and it’s always nice to walk in and find everything looking lovely. But, (there’s always a but) there are always things to do. Small maintenance jobs that only we notice, also, a deep clean of the oven, and a quick wipe-over of the bathroom tiles to make them all sparkly again. And I wanted to add a few extra creature comforts to make the place cosy for our winter guests.

I want the cottage to evolve like any home. Adding and subtracting with the seasons. Buying things. Moving things. Especially as we now have some repeat bookings. And with one eye on the reviews of course. Which to be honest are always fabulous, even though I read them sometimes with one eye closed in case they aren’t as good.

The biggest change I made was to add some more pictures and some plates to the walls. We had some already hanging you’ll already know, but there’s always room for more. And I decided to add my old tapestries that I’ve had in the loft for many years. They don’t suit my style at home anymore but they are perfect for the country cottage. To go with the wall hung tapestries is a cross-stitch cushion (all my own work) that I’ve placed on a bedroom chair.

I also added a couple of throws to the sofas. You know, for those days when it’s not so nice out and all you want to do is curl up with a pile of dvds. Look in the cupboard under the TV folks! One of the throws is more of a giant cable knit blanket which is amazingly warm, and it looks so nice and cosy in its new home. And a couple of coffee table books – one is about gardens of East Anglia including a couple that are nearby so it’s very apt.

Don’t forget the cottage is available to rent for short breaks or longer holidays if you fancy visiting the North Norfolk coast. The area is perfect for walking on windswept beaches, boating on the broads, exploring gardens and stately homes, enjoying pub lunches in front of roaring fires, and visiting Norwich which is a half hour drive away.
