Moodboard Monday – A Fresh and Leafy Living Room Scheme

This fresh and leafy living room scheme was an alternative idea for a client recently. They already had a couple of leather sofas in a deep jade colour that they were keen to replace, but I was at pains to convince them that they could work. I just hate replacing expensive furniture if there’s another way of incorporating the items into a scheme. Don’t you agree? Especially if the budget is tight and there are so many other things that need to be purchased. However, it was important to create a look that placed the old furniture into a brand new concept. We didn’t want the room to look as if we’d planned it around the sofas. Instead it had to look as if the sofas were perfect for the new look. So, this board was inspired by the colour of the existing seating but soon took on a life of its own. Sadly it rejected in favour of the neutral scheme I posted last week. I think it was just a bit too current, and the wallpaper was just a bit too bold.

Inspired by a couple of jade coloured sofas (not the one shown) – a tropical inspired scheme with touches of rattan, gold and a luxurious rug.

Get the Look

1. To incorporate existing strong colour into a scheme, choose another strong element to echo the colour on the other side of the room. In this case the statement wallpaper. But don’t overdo it. There are touches of jade in the cushions and artwork too, but only very small touches. Too much green would have been overpowering and the intention was to create a light and airy room.

2. To prevent a dated look when incorporating existing furniture into a scheme, choose items from different era’s and cultures. That way the effect is more bohemian and looks deliberate.

3. When mixing furniture and accessories, make sure to mix materials too. Here the bamboo chair picks up the tropical theme, but the light wood TV unit is more mid-century in design. They work together because they are of similar light colours.

4. Always add a touch of luxury in every scheme. Here it’s the Moroccan rug. I’d probably add a similar textured cushion to the rattan chair too to soften what is a less comfy seat.

5. Similarly, always add some metallics. Here I’ve gone for gold to warm up the look. The metal bamboo side table also reinforces the tropical theme. As does the cheeky monkey table lamp, and the gold pineapple artwork.

6. As the only pattern in the room is the wallpaper, I’ve added a couple of patterned cushions so that the room is balanced.

7. Finally, as all rooms should have a touch of black, I’ve included the black and white artwork and the black basket.
