It’s very easy to start rolling out the cliches when designing a bedroom scheme for a man. Dark colour schemes, leather headboards, pinstripe sheets, and bare-brick walls all immediately spring to mind. Along with dark and moody lighting, and wall-to-wall storage. But are they cliches or simply what men want? Designing a masculine room scheme should be no different to designing any other scheme in actual fact: layout, functionality and comfort are still the first considerations. But when it comes to style, there may be a few things that men actually do prefer.

Colours
Choose colours at the darker end of the spectrum. Dark grey, brown, navy, and even black are particular favourites. But mix in some mid-toned colours too to prevent the scheme from becoming too sombre. Taupes, mid-greys, and grey-blues for instance. Wallpaper is great for introducing a solid block of colour without it being too overwhelming, as it creates a softer more textured effect. Dark floors will balance out lighter colours elsewhere in the room, and dark bedding can also be chosen for its impact on the overall scheme.

Textures
Darker colours call for more luxurious fabrics. Texture will also create the impression of comfort. Wool, linen, heavy silks and a high-thread count cotton will emulate the cocooning effect of hotel rooms. Wall-to-wall carpets and soft rugs will muffle sounds and add even more comfort. In fact, many a hotel room is designed with men in mind and they are an excellent source of inspiration for a masculine bedroom.

Furniture
In general, masculine rooms call for simple but stylish furniture. Dark woods, leather (yes leather) and metal are all popular for this look. As are re-purposed items such as old leather trunks and old metal school lockers. Functional, minimal and with no frills is the idea behind most choices.

Lighting
Masculine type bedroom schemes have the same lighting needs as any other bedroom. A mixture of general, task lighting and ambient lighting. It’s also a great excuse to use metal factory lighting, or anglepoise lamps instead of bedside table lamps.

Decoration
You can’t go wrong with framed black and white prints or photographs. Window treatments look better if they are kept simple too. And if it’s not too much of a cliche, what’s wrong with maps?
