I have a fascination with old oil paintings. Especially portraits. And I love the recent trend to make them fashionable again. The quirky addition of bubblegum, pencils, neon paint and black eyeliner gives them a humorous slant, brings them bang-up-to-date and whilst done in the best possible taste, makes them ever so slightly shocking.
The Bubblegum Collection
The ‘Bubblegum Portraits’ by Young & Battaglia will be launching on 24th August 2018 and are the latest collection to catch my eye. It features a series of well to-do ladies in all their finery, letting go of their strict etiquette (that might cause them to go otherwise unnoticed), and letting their bubblegum habit add a little mischief to their paintings. Each artwork is printed on stretched art canvas and mounted on a painted wooden frame, and they are available in three sizes. Available soon from Mineheart.
The Face-Off Collection
Above is the Lord Lion and Grandma Wolf Canvas. Both part of the Face-Off Collection. She may look like a sweet old lady, but she has quite the bite. Lord Lion however can be easily tamed. This duo is available as a pair and features two classic portraits defaced by the rebels at Prince & Rebel. As with most of these portraits the beautiful frames you see are not what they appear. The frames are printed onto the same canvas as the artwork creating an optical illusion.
Defaced Duchess from the Renaissance Collection
This fascinating print, reminiscent of a classic Dutch Master’s painting, features an image of a Duchess with a large neon pink paint mark blurring her face. The Pencil Collection
Available from Rockett St George, the pencil collection is the perfect way of illustrating your fun and quirky side whilst also adding a splash of neon colour into a room. The Renascentist Collection
This contemporary Renascentist Portrait wall art is by Mind The Gap and forms part of a brand new collection of limited edition artwork. Depicting a small detail from a much larger Renaissance painting it suddenly becomes relevant. Especially with the addition of thick black eyeliner. Available from Limelace.
Fire, Mirror, Mirror and Water
A collaboration between British designers Mineheart and digital artist Himitsuhana, this trio is in the style of an old master but re-imagined for right now. Whether you choose the dandy young gentleman dressed in his fine embroidered frock coat, the young lady in traditional dress holding a mask, or the lady washing at the side of a babbling brook, it’s sure to be a talking point.
