Sofa (and Chair) Trends That Will be Hot in 2018

Ask anyone what their favourite item of furniture is in the house, and the chances are they will say the sofa. It’s where we spend a lot of our time reading, watching TV, entertaining, and just plain relaxing. So it’s no surprise it’s high on everyone’s list of favourite places to be. Personally it’s the one thing I miss the most when I’m travelling. Some will say they miss a cup of tea, their dog, their family, or baked beans and tomato ketchup. For me it’s the sofa. It’s also probably one of the biggest purchases you’ll ever make when furnishing a home. And, my advice is to always spend as much as you can possibly afford on a sofa and it will reward you with years of good wear and many, many, many, hours of comfort. So, it stands to reason that this very important purchase that you will have probably saved up for, and will be investing a lot of emotion into, has to stand the test of time. Not just in wear and tear, but also in the style department. No one wants a sofa that looks dated in a few years.

So, here are my predictions for the trends that will be hot, not just in 2018, but for many years to come.

Tailored Elegance

The Pollock Sofa from The Sofa and Chair Co.

You can’t go wrong if you stick to a smart tailored look. It’s sleek and sophisticated and probably suits a more contemporary interior best. The fabric is key – think of a gentleman’s suit – and the piping ensures the corners are always crisp. The sofa shape can be traditional or modern but pick a neutral grey or beige fabric and team it with furniture that has clean, bold lines. Smoked glass and metal will add a masculine slant, but silk, velvet and gold accessories will ensure it never looks too hard.

Jewel Bright Velvets

The Monroe Armchair from The Sofa and Chair Co.

This trend is for those who know their own minds and are not afraid of colour. Bright, bold hues are great for adding a wow factor to any room and velvet always adds a feeling of real luxury. Probably best if you stick to one armchair (or sofa) in a bright shade and team it with neutrals elsewhere, but don’t be shy about amping up the glam factor in other parts of the room too. Thick, silky rugs, wallpaper with a hint of a sheen and a luxurious fur throw will balance out the feeling of opulence in every corner. Not for shrinking violets.

Art Deco Influences

The Mouna Sofa from The Sofa and Chair Co.

The Art Deco look never really goes out of style. Although this sofa is more reminiscent of the glamorous era of 1950’s Hollywood, it does hark back to the Age of Elegance. You can be as flamboyant as you like when choosing a sofa that is so high on style. Really play out your fantasies with brass, glitter, the popular patterns of the time, and of course, a cocktail trolley.

Classic and Traditional

The Christo Armchair from The Sofa and Chair Co.

Choosing a classically shaped armchair can be a smart move because it will work in any room of the house. So, if in future you wish to move it to the bedroom, or you move house and want to put it in the hall? No problem. It will work. Pairing a classic shape with a monochrome scheme is an even smarter move. It won’t be a victim of fickle fashion. Ever. Looking at it’s best here, the Christo armchair is teamed with contemporary furniture, architectural prints and ethnic accessories. What more proof do you need that is will work anywhere?

Pastel Hues

The Sofia Sofa from The Sofa and Chair Co.

If you were thinking that pastels only belong in Scandinavian interiors or little girls bedrooms. Think again. This crushed velvet sofa is the epitome of feminine elegance but the wooden, curved frame brings it firmly into the 21st Century. Team it with even more pastel colours, luxurious textures, silks, metallics and Eastern inspired prints. Indulgent but so pretty.
