It’s always lovely to see a kitchen that is sympathetic to its setting. We all want to live with a modern kitchen and all of its conveniences, but sometimes shoehorning shiny sleekness into a period room just jars. Sometimes it works, but often I just think that it’s a shame not to play up the natural features and create more atmosphere. This Shaker Kitchen display at the deVOL Cotes Mill headquarters shows us all how it could, and should be done.
The Details
The walls have been painted in Farrow and Ball Charleston Gray to give the room a calm and soft feel. The wooden floor looks as if it has been there forever, complete with scuffs and a wonderful ‘polished over the centuries’ shine. And the standard Shaker range of cupboards have been painted a delicious black. Now named Printers Black. Complete with a black range.
The copper sink – so warm and glowing against these dark colours – plays on the traditional style. And it faces the lovely window with its views out over the countryside. The quartzite worktop brings to mind ‘real’ cooks rolling out the pastry and the artisan cup handles, wooden Bum stool and simple pendant lights all add to the simple country style.
Tips to Take Away
Kitchens don’t have to consist of wall to wall cupboards. Especially country kitchens. Leave a space for some rustic touches that entice you to linger longer and that encourage the family to gather.
I think this little table under the window would be my favourite place to be. Softened with a lace runner and a vase of flowers collected from the hedgerows, it would be the perfect spot for a quiet read and a cup of tea. The battered leather armchair in the corner would get lots of use in between chores and is handy for guests to sit and chat while work is going on. An old wooden ladder has been put to use for drying tea-towels and old apothecary jars have been re-purposed for herbs jars and utensil holders.
